Blade carry and what ?????/

A "backup knife" for what? Are you expecting your primary blade to snap in half and become useless throughout your day?

Folks carry "backup" knives for a variety of reasons. You could break a knife, yes, but it's more likely that it'll be lost, dropped, or out of reach at a critical moment. I've always carried 2 or 3 blades, and had others in my trunk. One is a utility blade / "beater" that I'm unconcerned about dulling or damaging -- nothing worse than needing a knife to do some heavy / inappropriate work (which could result in scratches, chipping, or a snapped tip) and realizing that the only thing in your pocket is a $400 collectable that'll immediately lose more than half its value if you mess it up.

and realizing that the only thing in your pocket is a $400 collectable that'll immediately lose more than half its value if you mess it up.

Then why carry a $400 collectable when you expect to be doing some heavy cutting?

My knives are all tools. I have no customs, collectables, or limited editions. I carry a $40 Delica 4 that I wouldn't be super heartbroken if I chipped it, snapped the tip off, or dulled it completely. I'd just take it home and reprofile it on my sharpmaker. I do have a nice Benchmade Osborne that I carry to work (suit and tie environment). Even then, it's only a $100 knife and I've yet to come across anything that would hurt my knife that absolutely had to be cut at that time. If that need arises, I'm sure the stylish Benchmade would still do its job.

Carrying 3 knives seems kind of mall ninja-ish to me. Especially if carried for self defense. A gun or can of OC spray is probably going to do you a lot better than a knife.

haha man you live in america, some people have to carry a blade and a firearm.
i carry both, because you have to over here. you dont live in a vilont country where you need back up knifes or gun.
sorry just saying man.

I'm not saying you shouldn't carry a blade and a firearm. I'm all for legal carrying citizens.

I just think people take the whole "backup" knife thing too far.

I had it narrowed down to just one, a BM Mini-Ambush in my right front hip pocket, then I picked up a Spyderco Native, and it took over. But then I went and got a BM Vex, and though I love it, I just can't seem to not carry the Native. So lately I carry The BM Vex in my right front hip pocket and my Native IWB just to the right or left of my belt buckle, angled for crossdraw. Today I had the above two, and since I was wearing BDUs I had my BM Mini-Ambush in my right cargo pocket, and my Wenger Handyman and CS Gunsite II in their separate jacket pockets. Overkill, I know, but what can I say?

I don't carry any of my knives for self-defence. I consider all of my knives to be tools. But I do carry 3 knives on a daily basis.

I carry a SAK classic because it has a nice little screwdriver blade that is quick to reach and I use to do prying chores. It also has a nice pair of tweezers and a toothpick.

I also carry a LM micra because it has real screwdrivers. (Apologies to the SAK crowd. I just don't like rounded screwdriver edges like the ones on SAKs. They slip.)

I also carry a Native III or similar because it has a nice blade for cutting. (I probably use the SAK most because what I find most often is a job that requires a small prying blade.)

3 knives, different uses.

I agree, but I doubt that many who carry more than one or two knives are actually thinking of the extras as "backups". They probably just like their knives. More power to 'em if they can handle the weight and have the space. Practical? Probably not.

For me, I like to only carry the minimum of do-dads that I feel there is a good probability will be used for something. I have to carry quite a few items for my work. If I carried multiples of an item, they would have to take the place of others. Life is hard enough for me to walk through without a jinglin' and a clunkin' as I go.

Some people feel more secure if they carry a lot of stuff. I know some guys who feel naked without a minimum of 300 keys hanging off of their belt. That's fine - Their freedom to carry keys is the same as my freedom to not carry keys...

Amok, I will not get into how much or little, but you have some quality tools strapped on. Be safe over there!

That's my view as well. I already have enough stuff I have to cram into my pockets. I'd rather carry an extra mag to a pistol than another knife.

I've actually starting sewing my own pockets and dividers into my jeans, makes EDC a TON easier and it is really cheap and easy to do.

Well, the quantity is getting out of hand!

I keep 'em all in the front right pocket. A Sebbie, small SAK, and a 4" Schrade trapper all bash around in my pocket, along with scratchy car keys.

They're gonna need the company of a little 2-bladed SAK, pretty soon. I'm only sorry my pockets aren't bigger.:o

Do I need counseling for this?

What kind of knives do you counsel that I get for my pocket?

Thank-You Folks for at least not saying, I carry this knife and a back-up and this for a backup for SD. Several knives if that makes you comfortable from a using point of view is fine.....If I were going to use a knife for hard duty....like skinning food in the wilderness, that is alot different from where I usually am located where a slipjoint or small linerlocked folder is plenty of knife for my needs...but your responses are informative and interesting.
Thank-you,

I carry a BM 940Ti with a Victorinox Hiker, or Recruit for EDC, and a Spyderco Paramilitary with a Victorinox Electrician Plus for work. Right front pocket for both. Most of the time all I really NEED are the SAKs, but the one-hand-openers are much more convenient.
Why do you guys carry so many knives?
Cause it's one hobby where the cool toys are portable!
I carry those folders above in the right pocket, and a flashlight in the left, but I've got a little backpack that I keep my daily stuff in for work, etc, that goes with me in the truck, in to work, and back in the house when I get home. I keep my EDC or work knives in it, whichever is not being carried, along with a Vnox Classic and LM Micra that are used frequently, but some days I might have several knives, several flashlights, battery chargers, sharpening stuff, all kinds of crap in there. I work evenings and nights, and have some free time to play around, bring books, and a MP3 player, so might as well bring my toys, too.

I sometimes carry multiple knives. Always carry leatherman blast and BM AXIS 805s. Sometimes I carry a Chavar mini fang neck knife, like man jewelry. I may add a slipjoint, or FB too. Why? Simple. I LOVE KNIVES!

Ironman, I'm with you!
Just like MAN jewelry. I live and work in Wisconsin, indoors and outdoors. Every day I vary my items but with a inventory of around 80 EDC blades it's hard sometimes on a Wednesday to decide who wants to come out that day.
I just bought a Microtech Troodon OTF lightning bolt razor blade half serrated double edged black as night silky smooth needle point knife.
Can you tell I like it?
I like a necker every day and there are only 6 to choose from so they stay on a regular rotation."Man Jewelry"
The Troodon is front right for any quick snips or piercing that needs doing, and I always carry a fixed blade on my belt. One fixie I have that's NOT a custom is a Buck Nighthawk 7" I think. Shelf Queen,a impulse buy from Wal Mart one day when I was Jonesing for a new piece of steel.
Lately it's been the Herb Derr 2700 layer Birds Eye Damascus that I wear on my hip in full view. Wisconsin law. Three inches.
I love knives too. To me getting dressed every day is a decision that usually helps decide which blade I will wear and who rides along for the day.
Putting clothes on is necessary, the rush I get is filling my pockets and loading my belt for the day. Some days with my favorite pants of course I wear a left side cross draw custom fixie and really look like I mean business when I grab for a bunch of grapes in my local Piggley Wiggley!
Not a macho thing for me,
I like knives and I like to buy and use fine fancy pretty blades as much as my strained budget allows. Load those pockets boys! Enjoy your steel!!!!
Peace.

As a boy growing up in the country on a farm, I always had a pocketknife on me. Hunting, fishing, camping, etc., would have me strapping a fixed blade on my side. If I anticipated heavy chopping, trail clearing, etc., then a machete was in order. Now as an adult living and working in the city (hopefully moving back to the woods soon!!) I still carry a pocketknife in the front right pocket. While I can't justify the need or even get away with wearing a nice fixed blade on my side on a regular basis, I like to substitute a large folder like a Buck 110 or a Case Sharktooth. I love the look and feel of having that folder on my belt. I typically can do 99.9% of my cutting chores with a SAK or small stockman pattern, but it's just plain fun to have that big folder on me. My only problem is that I actually use a multi-tool daily at work and typically like to wear that on my belt. I constantly flip back and forth between the two - I like having the folder more, but use the multi-tool more. So, I can understand why folks carry more than one knife, but I do admit that some folks get a little carried away with it.

.......great that you take such pleasure buying, carrying, and using your knives, mate. The trick, I think, is for each one of us to find their own passion, and the be able to use our understanding of that passion to relate to others. You know, be able to get a "kick" out of others' passions because we understand how ours enrich our life.

For me as I am older, I have been through many "stages" from multiple carry for a variety of professions and concerns to the single carry of a "beat-up" SAK missing both red, plastic handles. At each stage I carried what I felt appropriate and most importantly what I wanted and needed.

Presently..I carry a Case 70's 5 Dot canoe pattern slip with CV blades or one of many other slip joints from my collection in a shirt pocket.... and always a full size Cabelas D2 Grip in my right pocket . These days I get much more pleasure buying and using a well made traditional slip than anything else. This is the one I am carrying today :

Lately I've been carrying at Caly 3 rfp... its a great knife.

At work I carry a folder (usually a Spydie military or paramil) in my rightside cargo pocket but have been experimenting carrying an additional 9" fixed blade inverted, leftside crossdraw. Hasnt worked out that great... I think the 9" blade may be a bit too heavy. But I'm still tweaking it...

On another thread, I read a BF user carry a "suckers" folder (welded Buck) on his belt... I always thought that was interesting.

just wanted to know why some guys carry a flash light in the day, i understand if you are going out at night and take one along. But for EDC in the day i dont really think you need one.
oh and well i'm on this topic what do you think of the surefire E2D defender, thinking of picking one up.

I mainly carrie my blades and a firarm for SD. Its true i like to carry my blades but i dont think 2 blades on a person is over kill with your firearm.

I carry a flashlight (small SureFire) day or night because you never know when you will need one. One day at work the power went out and guess who had a flashlight:). There are no windows at our office so when the lights went out and the emergency lights came on, I was able to help people to get their personal belongings together and "show them the way". Just the other day, I dropped something on the floor and for the life of me I couldn't figure where it went. I had a feeling it went under something so out comes my SureFire and me on my hands and knees. I found the lost object under a shelf hiding in the shadows..

BTW, I myself consider some of my knives as jewelery for men. I have a couple neck knives (but have them covered up by my shirt) and my other knives in a belt sheath ready to come out for show and tell:p if the situation is appropriate. None of my EDC knives (cheap or expensive, production or custom) are babied. I will do the devils to them because they are tools.

just wanted to know why some guys carry a flash light in the day, .
I carry a baby maglight on my keychain. Use it all the time. You know how the plugs on the backs of computers and TVs tend to be in raised letters? And there is never enough light back in the corner where you put the darn things. The little maglight helps me read them.

Also, I find that if I make the flashlight something I carry all the time, I don't have to remember it when I go out at night, because it is already in my pocket. One less thing to remember. I need all the help I can get these days.
