Blade centering: do you care?

Like the others, it depends on the price of the knife.

I think the price break would be ~$120.
Below that, I'm paying for functionality.
Above that, I'd need some bling. And I consider centering to be bling.

This is a pet peeve of mine because either the holes are not aligned from production, the blade is not straight or the knife was just not assembled with enough care. But a minute amount on either side is ok. As long as it appears mostly centered.

I only buy production folders and i couldnt care less if the blade is off-center as long as it dosent rub hard on the liners. Function before form.

It would matter if i was buying a custom that i was paying dearly for.

...this is my sentiment also...i got more stressful things to worry about than a friggen off centered folder.
 
It's a huge pet peeve of mine. If I bought a knife and the blade was off center, I would be very upset. Even if it doesn't effect the function of the knife. It just bugs me.
 
I had a BM 610 Rukus that had an off center blade. The edge hit the standoffs/spacers and got a round dent. If you have a solid backspacer, this probably won't be a problem.
 
Could care less. Did not even realize there was such a thing untill I started reading about it here. Lot's to do about nothing in my opinion.
 
I buy custom knives, and I have a certain level of expectations regarding my knife; and blade centering is on the top of my list.
 
On a mid end production folder if there is minimal rubbing I don't care. If its over a hundred bucks I definitely want it not rubbing, but perfectly centered I still don't care. Now on a custom, I'd care, or on a very expensive production like a sebenza or strider
 
Having a blade off center bugs me. But, any time I see one, I just adjust the pivot and screws until it is centered. I didn't realize this was a common problem for folks.
 
Centered for sure. Although if it's not centered it's not exactly a deal breaker for me.

I just got another camo military in the other day and the blade is no where near centered. Sure it bugs me, but in the big scheme of things it's not that big of a deal. The world still turns.
 
If I buy a knife and I have a choice between 2 knives of the same model and one has it's blade centered and the other is not, I'd take the centered one.
 
A blade being a hair off center is fine for most models. High end models have no excuse. I prefer the blade centered, but a hair off and no rubbing of the sides is fine.

I'm picky as one blade in the past, I forget which from over ten years ago, eventualy became off center. Over time, it began to rub the sides and got so bad I couldn't close it.

I just got a Military today with blade badly off centered. I centered it but discovered when tightening the spine screws, that there were more problems than that. The two spine screws next to the pocket clip were totally stripped which explained why it deployed so easily and the lock didn't snap in place with any authority but just barely slipped in at 25%. Looks like it's got to go in for a replacement or refund. Too bad - I was expecting a nice example of this knife. :(

Here's instructions for centering a Military or Para, I've done it in the past and it's simple. :)

1. Tighten the pivot to very tight, then loosen the back spacer screws, press the blade to the opposite side and wedge the blade with paper and let it stay like that when closed.

2. Tighten up the rest of the screws, take the paper out and see the centering again, when desired result is reach.

3. You can repeat this a couple of times using more or less paper wedged against the blade - until the blade is perfectly centered and then adjust the pivot back to normal tightness, problem fixed.

The blade isn't out of alignment the scales are. ;)
 
A blade being off centered definitely gets under my skin. I tell myself thats it's not important and that it won't have any effect on the function off the knife, but I can never really warm up to a folder with an off centered blade.
