(Apologies if this has been asked and answered before (searching on BF does not work for me for some reason--I get a white screen as a result))

I enjoyed watching the cutting competition at BLADE '07. It was before I had run across Busse knives, but now that I am an Infi addict ("Darksvin", 8 Busses and counting since 8/07), I am wondering why a Battle Mistress was not one of the competitors in that competition? Will a Busse be in the '08 challenge?

Look, I am NOT trying to stir the pot! As I said, I am BRAND SPANKING NEW to Busse knives, and AM UNABLE to search BF due to some firefox glitch.

I have no idea if Busse has ever competed or not, all I know is they were not one of the competitors in BLADE 07, even though all the knives that competed looked alot like Battle Mistresses.

I am NOT trying to make waves, and if talking about Busse knives in competition with other knives is some kind of Taboo here, please forgive this noobie (and let me know, and I will not do it again)!

I am not a Troll, only a new fan of Infi who wondered why I have not seen it in competition.

Relax Darkfin, no one is offended. Honest question. But the rules of the official "Cutting Competition" at Blade has certain guidelines that doesn't allow production knives.

why are you getting all wound up?

if you read that OTHER thread i linked to, it should become apparant that the thread starter had ulterior motives.

if you sift through all the detritus, there may be some useful info there to better answer your question.

Thanks Gravelface. Well mea culpa--I am not familiar with the rules. Though I did see an article in BLADE talking about a new governing body for the competitions. I think what I saw said the old rules required the knife to be completely made by the competitor, but the new governing authority does not have that requirement. Cool avatar, btw!

Sorry Morimotom, will read the link you posted b4 my next post. I just tend to get wound up when folks suggest that I posted to start a fight, etc.

Just my personal opinion, so try and keep an open mind:

Busse knives are made for reliable heavy duty cutting, something like the ABS Cutting Comp requires a knife to do many things -some of which are not possible with a Battle Mistress, it's just not fast enough.

For example, anyone tried cutting waterbottles with a FBM? How many can you cut in one swing? Give it a try, you'll be surprised. I max out at 8.

Check out Gayle Bradley's numbers:

http://www.bladesports.org/

18 water bottles and a 2 x 4 in 2.97 seconds!! Plus they "brace" the 2 x 4, so you have to cut all the way through it, breaking the 2 x 4 doesn't count -you have to actually cut it.

Another one is the ping pong ball stab, the ball floats in a tub of water and you have so see how many you can stick with the point of your knife. Try it with a FBM, you probably won't get any, it's too slow and the point is too thick.

Most knives in the cutting comps are made to be cutters with full convex grinds, so "it's all about material separation" as Jerry Fisk says -not brute strength and smashing through cinder blocks.

It's like comparing a rhino to a cheetah, both are good at what they do, but they go about it in different ways.

thats ok. a misunderstanding is all, that is not what i was suggesting. though rereading my post, i can see why you felt that way.

Darkfin,

No worries. . . Morimotom was simply pointing out that the thread that he linked to seemed to have been started by a guy who was trolling as opposed to wanting to really know the answer.

We have checked into this and these tests are equally reliant on the skill of the competitor and the performance of the blade being used.

I emailed them this note on January 2nd, "I am interested in competing in the ICCT competitions as a custom maker. Please send specs of knives allowed. Thanks, Jerry Busse"

After no reply in January, I resent it in early February. I have yet to hear back from anyone. . . . I will now, send it once again. . . maybe the 3rd time will be the charm. . .

Seems like it would be fun. . .

Nothing taboo about mentioning Busse knives in competition with other knives here. . . . We have had an open challenge to all other knife manufacturers since 1998 to duplicate our tests "LIVE" in front of the crowds at BLADE Show. . . No other manufacturer has taken us up on our invitation. . . . Our tests are not reliant on the skill of the competitor but rather on the performance of the blade alone.

Welcome to the trough my friend. . . We're glad to have you. . . .

Jerry :D

Busse would have to be a sponsoring maker to be able to get INFI in the Blade Sports International (BSI) competitions, which to me makes BSI a self-serving for-profit organization, not a proving ground for knives and steels. On the other hand though, it sort of makes sense that a knife maker might want, for advertising and image purposes, to be able to control who uses their products in a proving grounds style situation.

I keep looking at the clock, looking at Jerry's posts. Wait, Wauseon is 3 hours ahead of me. Jerry must work the swing shift!

Or else this man never sleeps. Maybe that explains the killer knives!

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the reply. As you see I am new to the trough, but the Battle Mistress (FFFBM) I have would seem to hold up well in the competition I saw at Blade 07 (except maybe for cutting a free standing cigarette, which I am unsure even my Microtech Filet knife could do).

I do hope you get a reply, as my belief is that a Satin Battle mistress would be quite competitive among the knives I saw at Blade '07! At the very least, their geometry was damn near exactly the same as a FBM!

Thanks for the great knives!

We should have a Busse cutting competition. I'd put my FFBM in their with the best but would probably get my butt kicked by Ban's edges. But it'd still be a hoot. :D

For some reason, I thought the cutting competitions were sponsored by the ABS and required the blade to be forged by the competitor - so production Busses wouldn't be eligible anyway. Last comp I saw was on 2002 or 2003, though, and I know they've expanded since then.

The battle mistress or a variant might make a good cutting comp blade. I think the blade stock would need to be thinner and the grind optimized for the tasks, based on the comp blades I saw. Blade speed and low cutting resistance seem to be pretty important, as noted elsewhere in this thread.
