Blade Edge Keeps Chipping While Sharpening.

i have the knife and guess what guys, i just worked up a burr on the edge without any chipping. the knives i make are harder than this knife i do believe. i have a file i have used to test the hardness of my knives and it cut into this one where it slides on mine. i just took some pictures of the burr and now i'm going to see what happens when i buff the edge. i'll take pictures of the finished edge and post them on my new website. i'm going to try a convex edge and see how it works out and straighten the grind out some too.

Well, Rich called me this morning and had me listen to the sweet sound of the knife slicing through newspaper like a laser! :)

In all my years of sharpening, this was the only knife where I couldn't get a burr. Richard and I seem to think the diamonds were just ripping out the edge instead of smoothing it and bending it over.

In defense of the maker, after I told him I couldn't get a burr on the edge, he did say that these hard knives could not be sharpened with diamonds and he was right.

Funny too because I've sharpened S30V, VG10 and even 440V using my system and never had a problem.

It looks like Richard knows what he's talking about with these paper wheels!

Here's a couple of pictures Rich sent me of the edge.

He said he's not finished with it as he's going to put a convex edge on it and clean it up.

Looks great, and no surprise to me that the paper wheels could get the job done after the great job Richard did for my Spyderco Superhawk. If you can't get a paper wheel set up high quality water stones (as previously mentioned in the thread) will probably work well. My Shapton Glasstones sharpen every thing up to 65+ RC easily (including all hard M2, Super Blue, ZDP 189 and much more), but my 3 grits (1000, 2000, & 8000) will probably run you more than it would cost to get set up on paper wheels. If you aren't into power equipment, though, those Glasstones are great.
