Blade file work question

Hello

For those of you who do file work on the spine of a blade, I have a question for you. Do you do your file work before heat treat and protect your work from scale with some anti scale formula, edge quench to keep the spine soft and do the file work after heat treat, or draw the spine back after heat treat to soften the spine enough for the file work.

While each method I mentioned should work, I am curious as to how makers feel about which is best. Pros and cons of each that I may overlook.

Thanks for your input

Brian

I do it before heat treat and then clean it up afterwards. The clean up goes very quickly.

I do it before HT and leave the scale in for contrast. Looks good, but I have seen some sweet filework that's all polished too.

I do it before and i didnt know why just kidding freakin way to hard to file after heat treat . kellyw

I use rotery diamond coated bits and my dremel to do the filework after heat treating. Much more efficient that way.

After HT. Just because.

As an afterthought. I like to cleanup after HT and inspect all the surface and edges for defects and cracks.

I do all of my filework pre-HT Brian

Really nice stuff... put on 5-15 mils, let dry, falls off (mostly) when cooled from temp.Mike

I just placed an order with Brownells yesterday to replenish my supply of PBC and saw the stuff you're talking about Mike. I ordered a couple cans of that to try too. How long does it take to dry and how do you apply yours ? Paintbrush ? Dip ? Spray on ?
