Hi,
Im currently in the process of making my own knife and was wondering what are the preferred finishes for outdoor use.

The finishes I can do are-

-Satin (handle to tip or spine to edge)

-Mirror

-Polished satin (semi-mirror)

This will be with S3ov

I favor satin finish. Scratches are easily covered by re-satining the knife.

Mirror. Slower to rust in carbon. Signaling device in any steel.

Ifn ya want purdy, stay outta t' woods. :D

Try a Satin finish. Easy to put on when compared to a mirror finish. Satin finish is nice for using knives as it doesn't show up scratches as much as the mirror does. After making a few, you may then want to try for a mirror finish.

I personally prefer a crocus finish. It is rougher than satin and hides scratches better. Mirror finishes are, IMHO, better for drawer queens and show manufacturing imperfections worse.

Be this at it may, finish it to please yourself!

I prefer that tree sap glued come hither rock gouged look of a well used knife.

Its the look all the cool knives are wanting these days.

So most of you like satin then! Excellent! What i had in mind and the easiest to do.
I prefer doing a scotchbrite satin because its finer and when cleaning with a scotchbrite pad it renews the finish.

Satin finish on S30V, is what I prefer. This will also enhance the corrosion resistance and allow you to clean the knife a bit easier and the knife will slip into the sheath a bit smoother.

If you can mirror polish S30V in a reasonable amount of time (less then 2 days!), let me know! :D
