Blade finish

I recently finished a fixed blade knife and would like to change the blade from shine to a vintage finish (look old).I have heard about heating with a torch.But is there any other way ,chemical or ????.

What type of steel? a mustard wash should give it a aged look.

I definitely agreed with Will here. I would use the mustard it would be safer and would not create any problems in the steel. Reheating the blade would drawl back the temper in the steel and you do not want to do that. :yawn:

I read an article on antiquing swords to look old. They use a salt and vinegar spray solution which works really well. Gun blue and then dipping it in bleach also works really well.
