Blade Finishes

If you want to get ferric chloride it's less than $15 on Amazon for a liter. That's a lot. Ferric gives the blackest etch. Vinegar will be much more grey. If you want to try vinegar use a glass dish on your stove top and dip while it's heated. All of the acid that you use will be much more aggressive hot. I also do multiple dips. Wipe the oxides off between each etch.

I tried heated vinegar and, yes, got a grey etch. I soaked it for about 15 mins. It is a bit patchy in stripes but overall looks pretty good. This was after doing the stonewash, btw.

How does it look? If you do a vinegar etch, try and do the stonewash afterwards. The stones scratch up the etched finish and it can look pretty good.

I hand sanded to 600 grit before doing a stonewash. Couldn't see the sanding marks when I was done. I'll see if I can dig up the picture...

(Not the best pic, but this was with S35vn steel.

I wanted to post some pictures but not sure how. When I press the add image icon it says I haven't added any media. How do I add media?

Thanks again all for these great suggestions.

I have put the handle on this knife and when I was sanding the handle the stonewash finish, naturally, came
off the tang. How do I etch the tang while the handle is on to make the tang/blade more uniform?

Should I just take my time an Q-tip it along the tang? Will the vinegar harm the wood?

Tell me what you think of the stonewash! Go to the link in my last message.

I'd have shaped and finished the scales before attaching them, stonewashed the blade, and then glued them on making sure not to leave any epoxy squeeze out
