Blade flat sander?

I saw somewhere, someone had made a "machine" for finish sanding blade flats. the blade was clamped down and moved back and forth while the sandpaper was held stationary. I don't even know what this would be called so I'm unable to do a search on it. Anyone know of this device or even what it would be called?

:rolleyes:It's called hands
Ok, I laughed.

Seriously though, when hand sanding flat surfaces, so long as there is room on the object to hold it, I find having the sandpaper taped to your work surface and moving the object along that surface fairly effective. That goes for knives and jewellery, although it's especially useful on the flats of a blade/tang.

Check out the Youtuber, "shurap" as he uses it in pretty much all of his damascus/ knife making videos.

There was also a thread about it earlier this year where it was recreated by PEU (Pablo). Here is the link to that thread:

I couldn't help but laugh out loud when I first saw "shurap's" little auto hand sanding rig in action during one of his videos, although I could see something like this definitely helping makers who suffer from chronic hand or back pain etc.

Thanks very much, that's a big help.

You can also look for a surface grinder (https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=surface+grinder&FORM=HDRSC2). They do essentially the same thing and can be used for making super-precise fullers, angled edges, etc.

A surface grinder is meant for getting things flat and parallel; the mechanical hand sanding device is meant to make hand finishing easier, particularly the bevels, so they're used for difference purposes. I would much rather have a surface grinder though, as that sure would make things a heck of a lot easier and faster. :)
