Blade for a large fixed blade?

Hi,
My father has agreed to make a survival/outdoors knife for me. I want it slightly larger than a Fallkniven F1 so I think about an A1 (the laminated VG-10 is about 200 USD here in Sweden, ouch). Do you guys have any other recommendations. I prefer full tang.

It will have a desert ironwood handle and a black or dark brown leather sheath. I'm into the traditional look.

Do you have any opinions? Is the A1 blade worth it or is there better value out there for a blade (not a finished knife).

Thanks in advance.

How much can he make? Can he make the blade from scratch? The A1 blade looks good. Im not sure about the options there.

Dan koster is offering kits.

I'm sure Justin of Ranger Knives would sell you a blank blade if you asked him and his would come in well within your budget !!!

Hi Keith,
No he cant make any blades. Just handles and a sheath. I have pretty much decided on an A1 but it's only a difference in price of about +15 USD for a finished A1 with a sheath, compared to the naked blade.

I want a personalized one that I can pass down to my son when he is older. He is olny 2 years old now so I get to use it for quite some time still.

Hi there,

Have you checked out Brisa knife supplies on the web. It's stocks mainly knife blades from scandinavia and has an excellent selection, including some custom forged blades.

Link is here:

Lauri, Helle, Brusletto, Roselli are some good factory blades. Hankala, Mattsson and Carlsson are some well-known forgers. It's worth checking out Mattsson in particular since he works with laminated steels.

I hope this helps.

Good luck

You could always send your custom handle material to Bark River to make an upcoming production model from. You do have to select from what they are scheduled to make in the near future, lest you wait some really long time for a particular model. I think the Montana Guide or Gameskeeper/Gameskeeper II might suit you perfectly. I love the fit and feel in my hand of my plain-Jane natural Micarta Gameskeeper - a super knife.
