There has been some very serious interest from a few well known makers to turn the Bladeforums Bowie into the base for a Collaboration Knife for charity. A couple of collectors are also willing to help organise the process.
The Bladeforums Bowie Design Threads
The basic idea is quite ambitious:
- Collaboration of 4 makers
- Build is photographed at each stage
- Article written (if published and proceeds are received, they will be added to the donation)
- Knife, with sheath and some documentation is Auctioned for Charity (Breast Cancer Research??)
- ALL proceeds from the sale go to charity.
Time will be donated for free, but we (the collectors) will need to provide a fund for materials, handling, shipping, admin, photography etc.
I do not want to name any names yet either of makers or collectors, as there is a lot to be sorted out.
One of the first things to understand is whether there is support for such a project. By support I mean willingness to contibute a few $ upfront to get the project fund together.
A collector should consider this a contribution to fund, it is not to be refunded and will not be deducted from the proceeds of the knife. If there are any funds left over they will be added to the donation.
This is a big ask, and will require a lot of faith from all you guys, so before setting the process in motion and asking for any actual contributions, we just want to gauge how many will participate.
If the response is good we will make some announcements on the makers, timing and process, as well as asking for the contribution.
So heres what we need today.
If you can vote in a poll - and you want to participate please, vote in the poll.
If your membership won't let you vote please add a post to this thread.
I would also ask that if you don't mind please email me with a indication of the amount of contribution you had in mind. This will allow us to look at the likely funds available. When it looks feasible we'll let you all know an amount per person based on the level of interest. The request for you to mail me with a figure is just so I can get an order of magnitude of what people are willing to do and how many we'll need!
Cheers,
Stephen
