Blade Forums Knife Design contest

Jim,
I think this will really work but I am for voting on a single class. If it goes well we can do another. As far as the maker goes, we could solicite based on the style. for example, Lynn would be great for larger fighters but Alan may be better suited to utility/field style. Maybe we should take what we can get eh?
maybe we should post a solicitation in the customs forum when the style is determined.

You guys can go for it, but heed this:

There are several variables at play here. And the more you guys talk, the more complicated this becomes.

1. Who is going to make the knife?
2. Who is going to judge the drawings?
3. What common format are you going to use?
4. Are all the people who submit entries willing to forgoe ownership of the design they submit?
5. Legal issues, legal issues, legal issues.

There needs to be a lot more groundwork done before we give it our seal of approval. As it is right now, there are some pretty big loopholes

Spark,
Can we count on the forums for a couple of surveys?
1. For what type and size catagory.
2. One possibly two votes to narrow down the winner?

To all who may be interested in this, I have solicited Jim March via e-mail and will contact Spark on e-mail or phone to hammer out some of the details. I think we can pull this off and have some fun to!
Watch for more deatails to come.

If this thing really goes down, then count me in. As far as judging goes, why not let the entire population of Bladeforums vote on whose design is the winner.

My $.02

Barry,
This is what we will try to arrange with Spark. The forums has the software to sponsor a vote.

Public vote is OK by me!

Spark, it's true that some moron could steal a design. BUT, the theft would be obvious because everyone would know when the date-stamped copyrighted pics hit the net!

As one example I was trying not to allude to directly, when Allen posted pics of a finished product that was too close to another well-known design, we called him on it. To his credit, he made changes and there's no more problem...I'm not trying to drag that back up.

What I am saying is, we KNOW we can fix a "cloning issue" using just "pressure on the cloner's rep". And with that recent episode and it's conclusion, nobody is liable to try it again for a while

So, assume we judge by public vote. We need to line up a maker, and we need to figure out how many contestants. The number of contestants will have an impact on the entry fees.

Say we've got a pool of $200 for the total bill in materials and labor, not including sheath. Winner deals with sheathing on their own or something. Then let's assume a guy wins with a little 4" skinner or something. Since that will cost less than some 9" monster, the winner could have the piece done up in "fancier" format, possibly including the cost of Talonite metal. A guy wins with a 9" major fighter, he'll have to settle for 1095 or something to keep the price down, or pay in some extra to cover costs.

Makes sense? Or maybe the guy with the skinner has it done up as a $150 knife or whatever and has the maker do a sheath.

It can all be worked out. Let's try and keep the discussion in this thread; I see there's a second, I'm going to post to it with the URL for this thread saying "go here".

Spark, do you still have concerns and if so, could you lay them out in more detail?

To all: IF YOU THINK YOU'RE LIABLE TO ENTER, post here so we get an idea how popular this could get!

Jim

The winner with the best design, could forfit their official "idea", so if it is cloned, no one can legally do anything. I dunno, just another thought. -AR
