My sister was in the philipinnes (sp?) recently and brought me back this blade. It's 18 1/2" OAL with peened on handles, the blade stock is about 5/32" thick and is a stamped out pattern. I like that pattern and balance, but have no idea what it is exactly. Can anyone tell me what the pattern is called and whether what use the blade is made for? I'd like to find some info on the origin and traditional usage but have little to no knowledge of Asian patterns.

Thanks,
Nathan

Good Morning Nathan, I think that style knife is called Parang ( I think  ). Great looking Jungle Chopper if you ask me

I would say it is a Fillipino Bolo. I have one the same pattren it came from the Philipinnes some time before or ww2 . The i have has wood sheath.

I hate to break it to you, but that isn't any unique design to the philipines. I have seen that on ebay before it seems to be a mass produced blade. It is pritty easy to find custom and hand made "bolos" in the philipines but that seems to be a mass produced blade based off a filipino design.

definitely not a parang...

A parang is usually upswept.

"Bolo" in the Philipines is a name applied to any large knife - then the province is added to it.

So, to call it a bolo is correct, but incomplete at best.

A "typical" bolo - as we see it here in the states - has a straight blade and a curved handle.
Sometimes there is a curve in both...but not as much as shown in the OP.

It is closest to an e-nep from thailand. Probably simply a phillipino version of it.

Personally, I like it.

Great find!!!

Would you be willing to lay it down on a piece of newsprint, run a marker around it (trace the outline) and mail it to me?

The Philipines has MANY different styles of jungle knives.[Maybe a different design for each different island ! LOL] That one I would assume is a tourist knive since it has silly holes in the blade !

Yes Mete, I think you're right about that although I did "thin out some overgrowth" at my parents place this weekend. I noticed some rolling at the edge from chopping through 1/2 - 1" thick willows and there is bluing of the bevel at the edge from sharpening. I have to assume that this was not meant to be used hard and I have my doubts as to the heat-treatment - however, I've got a fair bit of 1/4" stock sitting around waiting to be used, and this is a type of blade I've never tried before - so we'll see what happens.

Thanks everyone for the info,
Nathan

Knife #1 & 2 are Bolos I got in the Philippines around 30 years ago. The Instructor for the jungle environment survival training (J.E.S.T.) made the knives himself. I actually got to help make knife # 1 so it cost me much more:) Very little English was spoken so I only heard of these knives being called Bolos. There are in fact many different knife styles in the Philippines with different local names. The Bolo seams to be the all-purpose knife. (jungle SAK)
