Is a fine wheel on grinder acceptable to do grinds? Or 1 to 2 inch sander? I use the fine grinding wheel, and finish with a 1 inch belt. Keep in mind my budget on tools.

These are pretty vague questions. Belts are better than wheels for bevels. Disk is ok for profiles, better than nothing. Over all, you'll probably find that good belts are better than disk grinders. Also, we need to know your budget to keep it in mind.

This place is a wealth of knowledge, use the search tool and definitely read the stickies.

I assume you're asking about a stone wheel in a bench grinder? And then you have something like a 1x30 to finish?

It can be done I suppose, but it's far from ideal. Changing wheel diameter can be an issue after grinding for a while. Not to mention, a wheel will give you a hollow/concave grind, where as most 1x30 and similar sanders/grinder will be in a flat configuration.

As for keeping your budget in mind, we have no idea what that budget is, or what tools you might already have, if any.

Budget is spent. 1x30 inch Sander. And a wheel grinder. Also have table sander (wide). Cant remember, maybe 6 inches. And an angle grinder.I seem to get along better with flat and very smooth wheel grinder. Wheel is material typical bench grinders come with. The right wheel is coarse (can't grind on it. Left wheel is fine and flat. I think it's the 2x47 that most grind with. But these are tools I have. I'm totally self taught and I have been reading this forum for 3 years. Just joined, yesterday. I also have a table saw and dremel.

Frankly, you'd be better off with files and sandpaper. I spent a lot of time when I was getting started using the bench grinder to profile, files to cut in the bevels, and sandpaper to obscure the errors made due to my lack of experience. Yes, I tried using the HF 1x30 as well, but for me it was really only useful for shaping handles.

Don't let your budget force you into using the wrong tools (bench grinder). Files work better for knife making.

I don't know what you've attempted so far, but once you get started, work on draw filing your bevels. Using that method, you can really get some sharp, clean and even bevels. It did my two first knives that was and was very pleased.

If you have done any knives so far. Post some pictures. It may be easier to help you out if we know where you stand currently.

Kevin, i cant figure out how to post pics. Mine came out convex. 10 inches oal. 1084 steel. Very pleased. But i need to do flat and hollow. Dang good using knife on the cattle ranch. I've got to buy 2 x 47 sander. But i can get it done on the 8 inches wheel grinder, with follow up on my 1 inch.

I started with good blanks. Kevin you're grind is sharp. Miles of Alaska does all convex. But he can get a large blade convex, very sharp. I do like leaving all the steel I can on. But for me to get correct sharpness, i need to learn Flatt and hollow. Thanks gentleman, im totaly self taught and had a stroke. I know no one to even call for help. Ive read this forum to learn , and finally registered.

That wheel will heat your blade real fast. The problem with those stone wheels is they change shape. I would stick to doing flat and convex for now until you can afford the right equipment, of just spend a bunch of time at it, that's fine too.

Good point Pitt. I use bucket of water and go slow. But yes, i can see that the wheel slowly changes shape.

Thanks Jeff. If I can do it, a trained monkey can. If you want to post a pic, You need to upload it to a sharing site (like photo bucket) and then insert the URL for that picture using the picture insert button above. If you have a smart phone, I recommend using tapatalk to access the forum, as you can then bypass those steps and upload directly in your posts. Welcome to the forum.
