So, I've been looking for this answer for a while but couldn't find it so I'm just gonna ask. After I cut out my blade, get a nice edge what is the proper way to temper and harden it? Forge it red hot the. Put it in oil?

What kind of steel is it? Don't take it to a sharp edge. Leave a flat on the edge to protect it until after hardening.

Tool steel covers a lot of ground and different tool steels have different HT requirements.

Saying tool steel is like answering pickup when asked what you drive.

That being said most low chrome tool steels need to get to about 1500f and quenched in oil. Some need very fast oil and some slower oil. Then tempered to around 425f for 2 hours twice.

Higher chrome (stainless) need to go to around 1850 for 30 minutes then rapidly cooled and then tempered somewhat like the others.

Without knowing which tool steel and having no real temp control it would be a crap shot to get a good heat treat.

I believe it's stainless... It's from
A file.

The stickies cover making a file knife. It will still be a crap shoot as far as if it hardens right..or at all.
