Blade Horns Function?

I am considering grinding a few blades in different patterns to see how they handel for different manipulations. I was wondering if the horns on the blade serve a specific purpose or function during manipulation, and if so, how is this affected without the horns? Also, what are the opinions on ATS-34 as a blade material? Any other stainless picks?

PS- I'm not a custom maker by anymeans, just a guy who really likes to make things. Suggestions would be great, but please try to keep them on the technically simple side, as i have only made fixed blades to date, and not many of those either. Thanks, E.
 
Blade horns? Do you mean the finger guards? if they are what you are talking about then in manipulation i see no use for them as the punyo and the scissoring action of both handles is what keeps my fingers from sliding onto the blade. They make for a nice beating tool I guess if you have an 'agila' eagle balisong.

as for ats34 for a handle material, I thiknit is infeasilble only because of price issues. you wouldn't know the difference between 420 stainless and ats for handles. For a blade yes for ahandles no, but if it is a private project then it is feasble. A jump between say stainless and say titanium or aluminum is more signifcant.

like talonite handles.. nice to the ear but bad for the pocket.

No need to be shy - I am sure this thread can go further and can get interesting. Like I wonder if it is bossible to make a pistol grip balisong.. many parkers have funcky handles that can easily facilitate this.. anys random thought.
