Blade Length vs function

The BRKT crew designed the Mini Northstar with this very thought in mind, or so it was written. Surprised that no BRKT fans mentioned it to the OP. Try it and move up a few sizes to find your large knife, like a Bravo 1.

buy a few hundred knives/axes/machetes/etc

Ha ha. Would that I could. Doubt I will be able to do that...any time soon at least.

Well I was hoping it would be a matter of labeling the purpose per tool but I see that it's more complicated than I originally thought. So it appears that it will take a combination of more research and taking any opportunities I can to test things for myself. Once again thanks for all the help everyone.

I really dislike mid-length knives (5-8" blade) for general camping and outdoorsy stuff. They just seem to get in my way, without being enough for chopping. Having aid that, I love a thin, narrow 5-6" blade for dedicated kitchen tasks. In that case the length helps to make smooth slices and so forth.

I prefer a 4- 4 1/2" long, up to 1/4" thick max (if wide enough and fully flat or convexed to make for a good sharp edge bevel) fixed blade for almost anything in camp or on the trail; plenty of cutting power (including batonning), handy for small tasks, more than passable for food prep. To my mind, anything smaller is a pocket or neck knife, and if you want to do heavy chopping you need to step up to a stout 9" blade or just bring a hatchet/axe/hawk/machete.

Just my $.02 :)

My blade of choice?
RAT RC6.
I can get my shavings(this was a stock edge, Its now convexed)

And I can get my firewood ready.

See this is the problem when asking what the best knife is.:D I found 6 inches to be too awkward for small stuff and not big enough to chop with. I'm actually going to GIVE AWAY my Swamp Rat M6 to my father. For me, a 4 inch blade between 1/8 to 3/16(max) is about perfect. To each their own.
