I would like to post this so all the sellers can read. Anyway I think it would be much appreciated if you sell a knife why not mention the length of the blade, just say'n.

That is because majority of members here are knife nuts and know pretty much every model. If anything you can always google the model and see more than just the blade length.

I would think most members will know blade length as long as the model is listed......I think.
Im forever going back and forth to Blade HQ and here. In some ways its also good because you can see prices as well when new. Thanks for you input.

In some cases I agree, but most of the time I'm already familiar.
But those obscure makers and customs and fixed blade models that come in multiple blade lengths, yes please post the specs...all the specs.
I can't tell you how many purchases I've missed wasting time researching all the particulars on someones vague sale descriptions.
No big deal for the seller because it sold but come on.
And to stake a claim on the sale only to rescind the offer when it's not what I want only screws up the thread. I never do that but the folks that start these sale threads need to know that some do.

An add-on to that comment:
I usually (don't know about others) know what I want/looking for and thereby already know all the specs/prices. I don't buy anything unless I'm familiar with brand/model and such. So basically if its an item I don't know anything about I pass but put a note in my head to look it up if I like the looks and based on research (YT/Google) I either hunt or not for it.

I agree with the OP.. Give as much info as possible.. I have been into knives for 45plus yrs and I don't know every model nor do I want to.. Don't ASSume everyone knows what the knife specs are!! John:D

yeah it would be nice on the individual sales forums, but easy to google on one offs i dont already know.

I can equally argue that a laundry list of specs copied from bladehq for every knife in a sales post of multiple knives easily makes it too long to read. In the end I still prefer to leave the specs out. But I do see your point and the OPs point.

I hate when a knife's length listed by it's blades length.
To me a 3 inch knife is a 3 inch long knife, not a 3 inch long knife blade and should be specified if meant otherwise.
Why should I have to specify oal so there's no confusion ?
After all knives have handles, and the length of a knife is the whole knife.
Why can't people do the logical thing and refer to a knife in it's length as a whole, and specify if they're referring to only blade length ?

Now of course this is mostly for fixed blades, and blade length is mostly what matter with regard to folders. Normally if you've got a 2.5" blade you've got a good idea of it's handle / folded length and vise versa.

I see your point, but by the time I look something up (pictures can be misleading) the knife is sold to someone else, especially the sought after ones.

Because your usage is not the standard one that knife enthusiasts and makers use.

A 4-6 inch fixed blade knife has a 4-6 inch blade.

Also, once a blade is long enough, the handle length becomes the same. Look at something like the Becker BK7 and BK9. They have the same length handle. The only difference is blade length. OAL tells you nothing.

Wait, the bk7 has a 7 inch blade and the bk9 is a 9 inch blade, the handles are both ~4ish so wouldn't they be 11 and 13 inches. The overall lengths are still different and i can see how that would matter, wjen talking about large blades if you need it to fit into a pack or something.

But yeah, the standard measurement is blade length and it couldn't hurt to list it.

I would think the opposite would be true - easy to Google production and midtech stuff, but specs on one offs should be posted. Usually, if I'm opening an ad, it's because I have an interest in the knife. If I'm considering buying, unless I'm in the Makers' section, I have a good idea about the specs... at least the ones that matter to me. If something catches my eye that I know nothing about...I want to look it up, and not just for the blade length (if I know nothing about the knife, I don't know if the posted price is reasonable. Neither will I know if it is generally liked/disliked.

yeah i wrote poorly..meant one offs as in ones i didnt already know. more so than actual one offs. good points though.
