Blade magazine... disappointing!

Well I picked up a Blade magazine at BN, have to say it's not worth the 6 bucks I paid. Mostly ads, short articles, nothing new really. I'm now wondering if there are any other knife magazines out there? There were more ads than articles, it's hard to even find one page without a half page ad. I get most of my knife info online but I like something to read on the road or on the can.

I'm a subscriber and beginning to notice same thing.

Tactical Knives is fairly good, but about double the subscription price.

But I may switch anyhow.

:)

At Amazon:
Blade Magazine: $25.98 / 12 Issues 1 year
Tactical Knives: $23.97 / 6 Issues 1 year

I think I'll go pick up a Tactical Knives magazine and check that out now.

What about non-knife magazines w/ knife content?

American Handgunner has about the best knife content of any gun and most knife magazines.

The best info is right here, the knife magazines are pretty lame, IMO. With the exception of the ongoing Q/A columns by knifemakers.

IMO, Tactical Knives sucks, I pretty much buy Blade for two reasons, one, to add items to my wish list, and two, to be entertained. Other than that nut, Jerry Van Cook, at TK, their articles do not entertain me. I try to keep up with the editors when they describe the different blade steels, but it's hard for a newbie that is only two to three years into the good stuff. Blade's articles are usually advertisements for whichever knife they are advertising, except for the few times that MSG Kim Breed finds a knife to be deficient, they don't have anything negative to say about a knife. I don't blame them, those knife companies pay some good money to advertise!

Why bother with a subscription when you can get everything you want without the ads for free here? Way better than a magazine. Or better yet, support the forum with a membership. Costs about the same as a magazine subscription, you get answers to your questions, and none of those f#$%&ing cards falling out on you.

Because the stuff here never says "This knife will do it ALL!"

Cuz we'd laff em off da forum an scare em.

Gotta have smiley pitchers an drooly stuff.

:D

over here in the netherlands i occasionally picked up a copy of Blade as well because it's the only american mag. only a few shops have on for sale and i was curious to read those.

well, just like you said, there's pretty much nothing interesting in it and it's loaded with ads. the ones that i bought, i was done with reading them in 10 minutes and they went right into the garbage bin. wasted money. the only thing i kept from one issue was the Dark Ops advertisement, as a funny souvenir.

i'm glad we still have 'messermagazin' here in Europe for some serious reading. too bad it's german, but i'll have to do. you guys in the USA have plenty of choice between various magazines, i think Blade just isn't the best one. how about knives illustrated?

...cause I want something to read on the can :D

As for supporting the Forum w/ a membership, sounds good to me :)

I got a beef with their Knife of the Year awards, this year it was the Van Hoy snap lock sumthin or other from CRKT. It's a interesting knife but Knife of the Year for a niche product?? I don't see people beating down the doors for one.
Well, at least it wasn't another William Henry.

I'm okay that they're milking advertising, I stick around because the articles are entertaining. Are you guys pissed that Blade has sold out and are not technical? Frankly, I have no problem with that, but I do buy CRKT and Cold Steel products :D.

Don't be too hard on the blade-mags. You have to keep in mind that the real purpose of almost all magazines, all media for that matter, is not to deliver content, but to deliver an audience for advertisers.

Just kinda sucks to pay for being advertised to :(

Just like cable TV..

Kinda like paying for popups or spam..

Without a magazine, what would you slice with your newest sharpest knife?

Only BLADE magazine has the required glossy thin paper with just the right amount of stiffener to adequately test the new Technotac X2215 limited edition (27,000 run) and that is what we base our recommendation on.

I pretty much take Blade with the same grain of salt I take with Guns & Ammo or any other gun magazine I read (with the probable exception of Gun Tests). I do find them interesting and entertaining, though, and I can't lay on the couch with a computer on my chest ;)
