Blade Noob - First EDC

I think I'm going to start out with the Mini Ascender. It's around the size I want and while I initially thought I'd want tip up so I can grab it in the pocket I found I dont have that much room to get a good enough grip so tip down will work. Rapid deployment is not a big deal for me since it wont be a pirmary defensive tool.

I'm going to do some more research on this one so there's still time for someone to change my mind, but I appreciate all the tips and suggestions and can't thank you guys enough.

+1 for Spyderco. The Tenacious is a great choice to start with. Or even the Persistence.

Kershaw skyline fits all your criteria. Spyderco Delica 4, Persistence, Native FRN, and benchmade mini-grip are all options I can personally reccomend. The Delica rides high in default tip-up, but if you put it at tip-down with your T6 screwdriver it rides a lot deeper.

I would recommend the Spyderco Native FRN. You get a very nice U.S.A made knife and S30V blade steel all for around $50.

My advice buy fewer knifes and spend a little more. Some knives like a good spyderco, benchmade will last you a lifetime even though you are using it daily. Sebenza's rock if you can swing it.

I agree and it's part of the reason I'm being so picky. (OCD and the bizarre enjoyment I get from researching and learning is the other part.) I'm of the philosophy of buy nice so you only have to buy once. So I probably wont hit a home run right away with this first one, I'll at least see if I can get myself to carry every day so I can justify dropping some more coin on the good stuff.

If there's any demand for help with PCs or Excel, I'll be able to reciprocate. :) I've seen some great suggestions from this thread and the forums and I can't express my thanks enough!

jeez, this question always feels to me like someone is saying: "hey, I'm new to dating, anyone want to suggest a good first girlfriend." or; "hey, I'm new to eating, anyone want to suggest a good food?" THERE'S JUST TOO MANY OPTIONS MAN!!!

I EDC a Benchmade Mini Grip (which you can get in all black, like you were talking about), and I love it. It's about 20 dollars above your price point, but 6 months down the road, wouldn't you want a knife that you really like instead of that 20 dollars?

If you're looking for something that costs 50 dollars flat and is all black, there's always the Kershaw Leek 1660CKT (which you can actually find at some Walmarts). That's what I use for my dress knife. Made in the USA, all black, sharp as heck. Slick little knife, nice size for EDC use too.

I think the Mini Ascender is a great choice.
I've owned some H&K knives and they're great for the money.
Another awesome brand is the Byrds by Spyderco.

My collection to date is kind of small since I just consolidated everything. But I have some great upper end knives that I just love.
