I have always had thin nails. I started carrying a small penknife when I was a kid because I couldn't seem to use my nails for scraping and prying things. If a knife is too hard for me to open, I have to either modify it to make it easier, or pass it on to someone with tougher nails.
I've used a knife pick when cleaning old knives with rust in the pivot to get them loosened up, but I often slip with it. Fortunately, these knives are rarely sharp enough to cut me when I get them. So I'm in the "I don't want to have to use a tool to open a tool" camp.
They are neat objects to collect though, and have other uses.
