Blade Opener or Knife Opener

Easy Blade Opener

I have always had thin nails. I started carrying a small penknife when I was a kid because I couldn't seem to use my nails for scraping and prying things. If a knife is too hard for me to open, I have to either modify it to make it easier, or pass it on to someone with tougher nails.

I've used a knife pick when cleaning old knives with rust in the pivot to get them loosened up, but I often slip with it. Fortunately, these knives are rarely sharp enough to cut me when I get them. So I'm in the "I don't want to have to use a tool to open a tool" camp.

They are neat objects to collect though, and have other uses.

In this day and age of super precision yet inexpensive products (think SAK . . . you thought I was going to say China didn't you) . . . I think there is no excuse for making a slip joint that is hard to open . . . for that reason I think knife picks are just more clutter. I suppose if one had an old knife that was just the cat's meow but was hard to open that would be an excuse to carry one . . . I'd rather mod the knife and leave the pic in the display case of days gone by.

Being a mechanic and always having my finger nails be a disaster area I don't cut my nails too short and I have chunks out of my nails and splits anyway so as long as the knife is not stupid hard to open I just use my finger nails.

Speaking of stupid hard to open this latest Case Trapper mod demanded an extra deep nail nick to over come the strong spring ( I ground it on the opposite side than the stock longer blade had ). It works smoothly enough I am having no problem overcoming the spring force to open the knife but it is right up there (9 ish).

Whatever works. If a blade opener is called for, then so be it. I have a Peanut with a secondary blade that is stiffer than you know what. What is the best way to loosen up a stiff opening blade? I have tried oil, and penetrating oil to no avail. HELP!

Right, I pick you for desert island Co habitation. Never in all my yrs did I think to do that:D
Now get busy with them coconuts:cool:

I was on Guam for a couple of months doing some work. My boss and I both like to fish so we hit the beach one day. I found a coconut and carried it down the beach for a while until I found what was probably a piece of rebar sticking up out of a piece of concrete. Perfect. A minute or two later my boss and I are drinking coconut water from our respective coconut halves while he was remarking "You know, I'm bringing you on all of my projects!".

At least if I'm lost on a desert island filled with coconut trees and pistachios I'll have a chance :)

I have thin, brittle nails so I prefer medium to light springs or a hard pull with an easily pinchable blade. For the same reason I also loathe half-stops.

Yes, I know it's old, but... I carry a large nylon washer. Perfect for hard to open blades. Easy to grip and it has a crisp edge that engages a nail nick very well.
