Blade play enough to warrant return?

Hey guys,

This thread pertains to my Benchmade knife which was an exchange for another one, and both of these have blade play. Now I'm feeling that returning this would just be a pain for me (paying shipping again) and for the vendor I bought from so I'm just wondering if any of you guys feel that blade play is considered a defect or reason enough to warrants returns.

It is annoying for sure as to get rid of it I would have to tighten down my Benchmade to where I can't even open it effectively. What would you do in my situation?

Thanks

If he sent you knives with blade play and didn't tell you about it then yeah send em back and tell him to pay for the shipping! If he misrepresented them then by all means demand that he pay to return them! Then if he wants to send them to BM and get them fixed up and re post them? I guess the first thing I would ask you is if he told you about the blade play? If not hell yes send em back!! The rules on the exchange state both parties must be happy for the exchange/sale/trade to be just!

Thanks for the feedback, but I bought this from a well regarded online vendor not from the exchange lol

If you bought from a well regarded online vendor then maybe you could work something out, such as free shipping on your next order or even ask that they credit shipping for your current order.
I have done this before and the vendor was more than accommodating.

Blade play is very common in production knives in my opinion especially side to side play. I've been collecting knives for a couple years now and the majority of them have blade play(yes even some of the more expensive ones). If I sent back every knife I've ever gotten that had side to side play then I'd be sending back most of my knives. Now if it's an extraordinary amount of play side to side or up and down than I could see sending a knife back, but if it's just a little I don't think it's worth the hassle.

I'm with Be long.... good answer.. another thing don't all axis locks have sum side to side play?

I don't know why anyone would 'accept' noticeable blade play when purchasing a brand new knife. If my $25 Buck 110 and Ontario RAT 1 don't have any blade play, how in the BLEEP are you gonna accept it from $100+ knives?

My axis is the Pardue and it has no blade play, even though it is very lightweight.

If you sent this in the first time, any "well regarded online vendor" should have inspected the second knife before shipping to you. I'd return it for a refund and buy from New Graham.

They do inspect it before shipment when requested. I bought a Benchmade from them over the phone. They had two and the guy rejected the first one and told me in advance, that if I was picky, the second had a slight blemish in the blade finish. I didn't care and got it.

I returned a knife to a custom vendor because the blade was off-center. At custom prices I expect a centered blade.

I had a Tenacious, it had a very long thin blade and the wobble was in part due to the thinness of the blade which was compensated for by its overall width. It's par for the course with that model and you really had to wrench it between your fingers to get it to wobble from side to side.

How easy is it to make the blade wobble. In use does it really affect anything? If it does to you, I would return it and you shouldn't have to pay for shipping again either. Would also demand that they inspect the knife they pack off to you. It's also sometimes par for the course when ordering online.

I have often picked up used knives which weren't really used at all by BF members. Not only do you get a good deal but you also have some psychotic anal-retentive knife nutty inspector #9 who has looked the blade over given it a seal of approval!!! :D

Depends on how much you paid. Since it's a Benchmade, I'd send it back for them to give it the spa treatment.

Always include a note with any warranty return. Explain in detail why the knife is being sent back, why you are not happy, and what you expect from the knife before it is sent back to you. Don't make them guess what you want done or figure out what is wrong. As long as your requests are reasonable, it should be repaired correctly.

I have two Benchmade axis locks a Mini Griptilian and a Mini Onslaught and they both have blade play, but I can get rid of it by adjusting the pivot I'm thinking about loctiting them soon.

IMO, a little side wiggle with an axis lock is extremely common. Almost all of mine developed it after some use and it does not bother me. As stated above, most of the time it can be adjusted out using the pivot screw. Find that sweet spot and apply a little loc-tite to the pivot screw. It does not affect the strength of the lock.

Up & down play is different, I would return/exchange the knife instantly for that.

My Bone Collector is solid in both directions but most AXIS knives I've handled had a wee bit side to side, no up and down.

Try tightening the pivot screw -- just a few degrees can make a significant difference. I think it takes a Torx #8.
