Blade play on Benchmade?

I've dissassembled a BM 710 before and my experiecne was the blade play disappeared magically after one final, random turn of the pivot screw. The play seemed to stay and stay then all of a sudden on one last micro turn it stopped while the knife still flipped right open. And yes I did the the Militec-1 and hair dryer treatment on it first.

What the heck is this treatment? How do you do it? What is Militec-1? What's with the hair dryer?

Sounds like a conventional Benchmade Axis lock Blade Play treatment to me, but I've never heard of it. I don't mind the play, but would love to know how to fix it. If I turn my pivot to where there is no play, it is way to hard to open the knife.

Thanks!

Here is the web page on application. I used a hair dryer to "activate" the Militec-1.

http://www.militec1.com/applicationinstructions1.html

I will say however, that I have several knives that I lubed with Militec-1 and did not heat them up and after a few days of use and "curing" they got much slipperier than the the day I applied the Militec-1.

I usually disassemble the knife, clean everything then just apply the Militec-1 with a Q-Tip, not more than that. 3 days after the initial application and several opens and closes the knife just seems to glide right open. In some cases I literally feel like I gained a 100% improvement in lubricity from the original condition ;)

Note: a needle applicator is available for the Militec-1 bottles for inbetween disassemblies.

Not really. You could save time by just dropping Militec-1 between the blade and liners, let it distribute for a day then heat the pivot area for a minute with a hair dryer the next day.

When I disassembled I would heat up the Militec-1 as I assembled the knife for about 30 seconds or so. i.e. I would swab some on the liner, heat then the bushing, heat, then the blade, heat, then the second bushing, heat then the second liner, heat . . . as I was assembling the knife.

The "Side to side play" you describe is what I call blade play.

Me too. I don't expect it in an Axis Lock Benchmade.

I also read for a loose and free blade, expect a little play.

Whoever wrote what you read is wrong. A properly "tuned" Axis Lock will have zero (blade) play, but the blade will glide under its own weight alone when the Axis studs are held back.

I suggest that you follow my excellent tutorial :p. No need to strip the handle - just follow the blade/washer removal and replacement sections.

Very cool. I remember that thread. I'll read a little closer.

I know I'm not the only one, but I love all the photos of your minigrips/grips you put on here from time to time. Truly an awesome collection of cutlery.

Hi everyone. First of all thanks for all the great reviews. I’m just a beginner as a knife collector and you guys helped me a lot to learn more about knives. Yesterday I purchased two new knives, a 610 Rukus and a 710 in D2. I love them both but I just noticed a little side to side blade play on each knives. I tried to adjust the pivots but then the blades won’t open smoothly. Please let me know if anyone else experienced similar problems on these two Benchmade folders.
My Benchmade Mini Griptilian has side-to-side blade play too.
