blade prep for handles

how fussy are you guys in the sanding and prepping the area on a blade that is going to be covered up with the handle material? does it need to be taken to 220 before HT and then scale cleaned off. or should it be polished like the rest of the blade. just curious sence its going to covered up anyhow.

Sandblasted adds the best scale strength, therefore, I use 40 grit sandpaper on my handles just before putting epoxy on them.
 
I don't polish them because I figure a little roughness helps the glue grab on. Tracy was pretty adamant about surface prep in his Glue Wars conclusions. Apparently the best way would be to lightly sandblast the tang, but I don't have a blaster. I do try to get the edges of the tang finished as closely to the blade as I can.
