How fine of a finish do you need before having it heat treated. what grit sandpaper or should it be polished.

If you are having someone heat treat for you, ask them what they prefer. I think ive heard around 220 is good just make sure there are no big scratches. Polishing would be a waste of time because you will have to removed the scale and repolish after the heat treat.

Todd, depending on the blade grind, 150-220 grit for me.

I go down to 220 grit.

I heat treat my own, with a foil wrap. So I'll usually go up to 400 before hand.
If you are sending it out or not using foil, I agree that 200 or so would be just fine. Hope this helps some. ~Cliff
