Blade protection

Per bsmith_shoot's photo of the Kasco Corp "Super Sharp" food grade lubricating oil, the FDA CFRs listed pertain to "white mineral oil", so that's another vote for mineral oil. Their version may have some antioxidants in it. Mineral oil is widely available, and widely sold as butcher block and wooden knife handle oil by restaurant supply stores. But if you keep your knives dry, you probably don't even need that. Just my $0.02.

Food grade/medical grade mineral oil (found in medical supply area of large stores) is what I use on all my knives once a year that just sit around. Fact, I have used about anything I can get my hands on. I also use non-detergent motor oil, but "mineral oil" is so human friendly its just easy.

I am not an oil snob on weapons or blades and would use anything. That is really the key....i.e., use something.

I keep mine dry, if for some reason some rust DOES start to form on the edge I strop it a couple of times and it is gone.
