I did a few searches and didn't find anything specific to the damascus blades offered at KnifeSupply.com.
I'm particularly interested in these two, if it varies much.

I don't expect perfection, but as long as they are decently heat treated and look good I'll be happy for the project in mind. The knives being made are 90% for show with the chance for some random use, I just don't want it to break or bend the first time someone so much as looks at it crosswise.

Im sure there will be lots of other comments, but the first thing I noticed in the links is that the damascus is made in India and Pakistan. I would try and stick to damascus made here. Might be a few bucks more, but the quality should be much better.

I don't know about the quality.
But... Made in Pakistan /$25. gives me the Idea it is not very good IMO.

Ive built and used these.I had a couple from Paki with delamination.(coming apart)The others were pretty decent for the money. The India made are better than the Paki.I would also suggest paying a bit more and getting something made here.

The delamination part is obviously not going to fly. I might try one of the indian ones in the future but buying better damascus isn't really an option for this particular project, too much money. I'll stick to standard steel instead.

Basically the idea was to make a pretty knife for someone to wear at a Ren Faire where it might see occasional light use but nothing serious. However, too low a quality undermines that and I can see the person banging it around a bit now and then. The fact that she might use it for cutting fruit and such also has me thinking stainless might be a good idea. She's not likely to worry particularly about cleaning it off 100% right afterward.

I'm ordering some ATS-34 for other stuff and will just use one of the spare pieces for this. I'm fairly new to making my own blades from scratch but have a long lead time for this project so if I goof three or four too badly to recover before I get it right it isn't the end of the world. :) Just a gift for a friend.

Thanks for the info, all.

On the actual suppliers website for dealers it doesn't say anything about the makeup of the steel.

but, I have the catalog right here with me and all it reads is stainless steel.

Very nice, thank you for that link. None of their damascus blades will work for this particular project but there are some beautiful pieces there at great prices. I'll definitely be ordering from them for myself if nothing else. :)

eta: maybe if I just revise my thoughts on how long a blade... plenty of styles there that would work, I was just thinking of a longer blade since she's likely to be using it as part of an act and bigger is more visible to the audience.

Both Alabama Damascus and Two Finger Knife make high quality damascus. I have used both and have been very pleased with the sharpening and edge retention of their blades.
