Blade Ripples

Okay, took the day off of work to play in the shop. While flat grinding a new blade, I had something happen again to me. I grind O-1 and at some point it developed ripples lengthwise in the blade. It actually looks kind of cool, too bad I can't get it to happen to both sides. They are deep enough to feel and are a b*tch to grind out. Any idea how or why these develop? I noticed this time that right before they happened the blade jumped a little on the belt, but I know the belt is tight enough. Let me know your thoughts.

Erik

Edit: This usually happens with Klingspor Yellow belts at 120 to 220.

Forgot, this usually happens when I'm grinding the left side of the blade edge up. I'm right handed, so this would be right to left motion. Don't know if that makes a difference.

I don't think it is, I have a ceramic platen, but it's possible the seam in the belt my catch it just right.

It may sound dumb, but have you put the belt on the wrong way? Sometimes the splice bounces and make those little ripples. They usually come out on the next grit, but not if they are deep. The yellow belts are very thin and will transmit any bumping right to the blade.

The belt isn't on the wrong direction but my ceramic platen does have a small crack which developed shortly after I put it on. Maybe it's causing a jump but still can't figure out how it would make such a deep ripple.

Bruce,

Nope, been there / tried that, didn't work out for me so I stay away from it. I'm pretty sure now thinking about it that I just buckled the belt slightly when it jumped. Either that or a vapor barrier formed when the metal was overheated and caused the metal to deform somehow. I think the former is more likely. Thanks for the input, guess this is just me on this one as far as experiencing it.
