Blade Sharpening with Lansky...???...

OK; I just got a Lansky Deluxe Kit today. I set it up (I got the aluminum stand too) and straightened out the rods, oiled the stones, tried a 30* grind on one of my old knives, coarse/medium/fine. Seems to work OK. ;)

Now, there's an ongoing argument about whether 25* or 30* is best. I'd like to know if the angles being discussed correlate to the markings on the Lansky...or whether it's a combined angle...

Also, just how do you determine how many strokes are right for truing up a mis-sharpened blade??? I read here someone said 10 strokes for each grit, each side in turn...

Is there a tutorial for the Lansky??? The instruction booklet is somewhat lacking...all three paragraphs of it... :)

Any comments welcomed! :D

...I bought an Edgepro Apex last year for $125 from TAD...It was shortly thereafter destroyed by the wife during a cleaning frenzy. ( She moved it and it's box to the garage and then drove over it )...I'm sure they have them for a LOT less than $500...I do use the Lansky though and it's been doin' a good job...

darryl i sure hope you give the wife a good talkin to about monkeying with your stuff lol seriously though thats too bad
the 500 is for the pro kit with the works , i figured if i was getting one i might as well get it all at once but i will wait a while yet
if i do get one i figure to send them my edc for their free sharpening demo and have it sent back with the kit

The Lansky Deluxe Kit was $39.99 and the stand was $7.99 from SMKW...

(Sorry for the confusion!)

I think I got the technique right but my eyes is bad...

What angle (what hole really) do most of you use for the 110/112???

...Yep...The "Pro" was a lot more sharpener than I really needed. If I wanted to sharpen knives for a living...that and a belt sander would be all I'd need...LOL...The wife scolded ME for leaving the box with the Edgepro on the kitchen table...Go figure huh??...LOL...

lol that is funny its too bad to cause at this stage of the game its probably too late to try and train her right :D
and yes the pro is definately more than i need and probably even more than i can use but i figure i need every advantage i can get:o

goose check your pm's

I match as close as possible the angle already on the knife unless I have a need to change it. I think of 25 deg. as a mid point working angle. I cut the edge until it is clean at the edge and finish with finer stones then leather. I put every knife in the Lansky exactly the same way every time (it is just a system I use) and it is easy to remember the blade angle just put the unoiled stone on the edge and you can see where you were the last time you sharpened the knife. If you do not "steel" the knife in between sharpenings it will resharpen very quickly.

...Still...for the money you have a hard time beating a Lansky...It does the job on a dull knive quite admirably...

Trax,

I have used both the 25 and the 30. I put a few strokes on the edge and look to see if the new polished edge match's the old edge. When it's a match I give it just about what you said....around 10 strokes then flip the blade and replete.

The blade width is something to consider in what angle to use. If you try to go with a 17° on a thicker blade the sides of the edge will be wider. Likewise a thin blade with a 30° edge will be very narrow. Some experiminting is needed to find the angle that is aesthetically pleasing as well as functional.

I got a Lansky Deluxe Diamond from the wife last year for Christmas last year, you can not beat the price value. I was wondering about the angle myself, thanks for the thread.

ugh .02 here...
for thoes for whom the eyes are not as good as a teenagers
a balck majic marker on the edge will give you an instant
referance on what the stone is doing...
when finuished a touch o carb cleaner and marker is gone...
if carb yunk is not avabile the wifes fingernaile cleaner will work
but dont say i told ya as the ladies done likea ya getting there stuff!!!

angles IMHO of course =
max at 30 for electricians and hard work
20 - 25 for every day
meat go to 17

Spent a little time on my 110 w/drop-point 426 blade...25* holes, got it so it will cut TV Guide coupons into strips while holding them in one hand and swiping with the knife...that's kewl!!! [as The Cheerleader would say]... :p

Dave's magic marker [poor man's bluedye] trick works OK if your eyes can see that small...I have to use a magnifying glass...

What do you guys do about the point??? Some OEM sharpened new 110's/112's I've gotten had needle points...can you sharpen the point to a needle tip???

...

Dave...my eyes work just fine lookin' at those older teen co-eds.

Trax, would ya say that I should've added the stand to my Christmas list?
How functional is that kit w/o the stand?
Why is the sky blue?
