The Blade Show is just about five weeks away. Considering the number of JS Smiths testing for their masters, this should be an exceptional year. Can’t wait to see their test knives. And of course, Blade seems to be where all makers bring their very best.

We would sure appreciate pre-views of any BLADE bound knives makers care to share.

If anyone has trouble posting your photos, please feel free to e-mail them to me and I will get them posted up: Kj1056@aol.com

Let’s start with Jerry’s dressed up field grade Sendero: It has a W2 steel blade forged from round bars and double tempered. The handle is of Sambar stag and has stainless mountings. The engraving is flowers on the pins and "chain of fools" engraving that is bordered by 24kt gold inlay. All dressed up and waiting to go home with someone at the Blade Show.

And here’s an outstanding Damascus “Hombre” Southwest Bowie. A new design from Lin Rhea:

OAL= 13 ¾”
BL= 8 3/8”
Thickness= ¼” @ Ricasso
Fittings= SS
Handle= Blackwood
New Damascus pattern form Lin

Here is a snapshot from the bench of Don Hanson III, to get all of you in the mood for Atlanta.

Here is the Red Mammoth that Don scrounged up for the handle.

That will do it Peter! I was out at Don's shop today and laid my eyes on that one. If there is anything you don't like about it, be sure and let me know. :D

Seriously, that is going to be a great bowie. I think Don said it was his first framed handle. The ivory is awesome. And, the damascus will come shining through. Anxious to see the final results!

Are the red ivory slabs going on this Bowie or the shaped slabs in the background of the Bowie photo?
That red is outstanding.

Kevin,

One of the walrus ivory scales in the first photo was slightly flawed, so Don whipped up a couple of red mammoth scales in his basement to replace them. The scary part is that I think the red mammoth will be even better.

This will no doubt be some Bowie. Much of that deep, rich color should remain after Don's works it to shape.

Thats Mammoth is what every maker wishes for! Man, even the shape of the scales are mirror image. I look forward to seeing this knife. :thumbup:

BTW Don, I will get by your table to see this one! I will be at table 23-P, if you get time. Lin

Dang, where does Don find all the beautiful ivory that he has? I would love to know his source.

Keith, I had a good source for rough, uncut mammoth but it dried up. I get most of my ivory at the major knife shows, were I can see it in person before laying out the cash.

I was sick when I found the cracks in the tiger stripe walrus scales (about a $400 set of scales). I don't have but three sets large enough for this knife and Pete chose the best of them, the red popcorn mammoth will look real good here.

I gotta get to work! See ya'll in a few weeks.

Edit to add: Joe, I enjoted your visit yesterday. You'll have to stop by when this bad boy is finished and handle it before Peter gets it :D And Lin, I look forward to a visit at the big show.

Here's a fighting bowie I'll have with me.

I'll have seven other bowies for sale as well; mostly big hamon bowies.

I will have Point Seven take a few photos which I'll post.

That red mammoth looks amazing - and the blade ain't too shabby either... :)

Nice piece Matt. What's the handle made of?

Don......are you testing this time around? Oh....and after seeing your stuff, Matt, I think tht I won't be testing until at least 2009 instead of 2008......lol

Yep, you faired well Peter.

Don, you worked that ivory with precision. Removed quite a bit of material yet maintained a lot of color and texture. Bet you were very patient and cautious with it.
