Blade Show 2015 thoughts and observations

I was wondering what was going on when I could not find you Sat and Sunday brother. Btw one of the best parts of the show for me was listening to your dead on insights Friday. Will try to call over the weekend.

STeven,

ALWAYS appreciate your Blade Show thoughts, observations and review.

As well as your special insights on all elements of knife design, construction and values, Thanks ! :)

Whether I miss Blade or not, I always look forward to comments, Steven, and appreciate your commitment toward providing them.

STeven, always a treat. Short visit with you first night, sorry to miss you Saturday night. Always enjoy your take on how the show went down. I thought it was one of the best I have attended.

It's done....whatever I missed can be discussed or I can always modify the OP.

Steven thanks for the excellent report. It was great to spend a little time with you and Gus on Thursday. I am very sorry to hear that you were not well on Saturday. I left early on Sunday so I missed you. My apologies.

I am hoping to be at the East Coast show in March and I look forward to seeing you then my friend.
Take care and all the best.....Steven

Steven, with your show overviews, we get a funny, but really detailed show review.. I look forward to them always.. In spite of getting so ill, and missing a day, you sure seemed to cover a lot of ground..

I hope it was business success for you as well.. Getting selected as a judge must be gratifying, and provide you a chance to closely examine some of the finest knives out there at the moment...

Asking for a few of your favorites isn't fair, but was there a trend, knife, or maker that was a pleasant "surprise"?

Thanks again for the recap Steven...

Regards, Rich Slaughter

Hi Rich,

1. Bad trend this year.....the rules of the contest state that the knife submitter must have a table or booth in their name....this is a result of one of my friends who has had a number of awards in the past....and not had a table....with resulting(and frankly justified)complaints.....so...two extremely talented makers were disqualified from the contest and we wasted a bit of time arguing about the work, which could have been avoided.

2. Good trend.....many of the ABS guys that submitted produced knives of extreme beauty to go along with stupendous damascus...both Dave Lisch and J. Louis readily come to mind.

3. Grace Horne....sheesh....Grace is like one of the most perfect humans in the world...I love her eyes, her laugh, the way she talks and what she makes...Grace makes compelling work...it is almost impossible to typify. Some is just ok, some is simply great, and some of it is so cerebral and wonderfully conceived that it blows your hair back. Always a treat, be it 5 minutes or an hour. Seeing Grace Horne on an annual basis is a joy.

4. Richard Rogers....have watched him dominate in many aspects of the knife world by just being himself and making work he enjoys. He reminds me of Vince Evans....

5. Developing continued friendships with Nathan Carothers, Gus Kalanzis, Dan Keffeler, Steven Lewis and Ryan Weeks...makes me feel fortunate to be in this community and learn so much from other people all the time. It's a gift, and I cherish every minute of it.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I know most of the customs officers by name now.
Not a pleasant experience.

Blade is the greatest show in the world to me. US Customs just piss me off in a big way.

Thank you STeven. Reads like a Raymond Chandler novel. With your commentary and Coop's photographs why it's almost like being there. ;)

I think about James Ellroy when I write......the poem-like style of his writing.....rhythms, space and words....that is a real work in progress...would like to improve my writing so it is sharp and pointed like a knife, but reads like wit and humor, rather than venom and bile.

Working, working.

That sounds more than a little poetic, my friend.... :)

All the best,

Good review as always. I missed some of the show running here and fro so it is good for the insights of someone with a background in knives. Thanks STeven

Sure thing, brother!!

Glad all who read it seemed to enjoy!

Between Joe Paranee, Caleb Royer and Coop....there is WAY more review than there was when I started doing them, probably back in 2003 .

Blade is a treasure of a show, hard to have a bad time there, even if you spend a full day curled up in a fetal ball, puking.:barf:

Thanks for your review, it was fun to read. It good to see you at least for a few minutes and let you get your time in for abusing me somehow.. ;) :) It was good to see ya!

Hardly qualified as abuse, Jon.....both Joe and I had whips this year......oh, the delicious pain!!!!

Good to see you too, wish we had more time.
