Blade Show questions...

The urban camping scene in Atlanta near blade is frowned upon by the local authorities. That and the 100 degree weather around that time of year.....just hope people utilize the showers, remember they come free with your room.

I would like to say that anyone going to Atlanta for the first time to be careful. If you are like me and not used to a huge city you might not be in Red Alert. When walking around Atlanta anywhere outside or most anywhere at night you need to watch your back.
It is the only city I have been too where a nice hotel in a fairly good part of town had flyers in the rooms warning not to answer or door after dark and not to be outside after dark if you do not have to be.
I had to go for training last year when I stayed at this hotel near the airport. I was bored the first night after class and thought sense I had my GPS I would go driving around. People in the class from the area told me I was nuts. Didn't take long to head back to the hotel. I am a good size guy with a sidearm and I was scared. Only place I ended up going after that was the Charley's a block from the hotel and to Bass Pro. The Bass Pro was 42 miles from the hotel and still in Atlanta. It is less than that from my town to Knoxville.

That Bass Pro is actually in Duluth, if I'm not mistaken, though it's still "metropolitan" Atlanta.

I've spent a lot of time in the Atlanta area on business. Folks avoid downtown, but nearby Buckhead is nice and (relatively) safe. If anyone is thinking of taking the metro, I wouldn't recommend it. It is sketchy and not real populated. The area around the airport is really sketchy, too. If you are going to drive, be prepared for legendarily bad traffic.

I did get a really good look at that area around the airport. I went to a Wal Mart to pick up a few things and decided I did not want to leave my truck parked long enough to go in. Stopped at a gas station down the road from Wal Mart and was lets say propositioned twice, once on the way in and once on the way out. The area around the Galleria is not near as bad.

The Blade show, at the Cobb Galleria, is located in the N/W corner of the Atlanta area...fortunately the best part. As Garth suggested, stick with a few of the Busse crowd and you should be fine.

Oh Atlanta aint that bad compared to going to DC. :D

I grew up 60 miles north of Atlanta. Although it has grown leaps and bounds...I remember when Buford only had a KMart, and the best reason to be near there was "the Islands" at Lake Lanier.

For those that don't know or havent watched "COPS";):D-DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE IN STATE OF GA for any reason. You might regret it.:(

I would say stay close to Waverly cause blade is wide open and every second counts. SHeraton is nice as its just across the street from Waverly, but can be closer if walking. I have 5 (2) room suites reserved there each with a king bed and living room with pull out sofa, and fridge that makes em large enough to share with friends or family.

I live in NW Atlanta area. I would be happy to answer any questions or provide recommendations on restaurants, lodging, etc. I'm just a PM away:)

As a resident, I will give these pointers. To a resident Atlanta is not nearly as dangerous as people make it out to be, but to a visitor it is very easy to end up where you will become a victim. My best advice to Blade show attendees is to stay in the area of the show. Try to get your hotel in that area, book early as they will sell out. I work in the area where the show is, during the daytime and typically at night that area is safe. And to echo earlier words, do not drink and drive unless you want to spend 48 hours locked up, as confusing as the roads can be here its a sure fire way to get ticketed, arrested and meeting new friends in the county jail. If anyone has questions about nearby hotels and such, post them here and I'll answer as I see them.

Any place to camp around there?

Don't know of anything real close, but if you're talking about RV camping, Red Top Mountain State Park and Atlanta Marietta RV Resort (http://www.amrvresort.com) both offer that. Red Top also has tent camping sites if you're looking for something in that line. Red Top will give you probably a 60-90 minute drive to get to the show depending on traffic. The Marietta location may be a little closer. Don't know anything about the Marietta RV park but I have tent camped at Red Top. That time of year in north GA should make for a very pleasant camping experience.

What's the rate there? I dont mind a drive just some where to pitch a tent, not worried about "trouble" I'm plenty protected

We hope to see you there! It's an awesome time and you get to play with knives all day =) What more could you want?!

It varies depending on the time of year. You can google Georgia State Parks and then pick Red Top Mountain from the list. Showers are spotted around and electric hookups are available for most of the tent campsites. It'll be on the north side of Atlanta like the show is, but I think Red Top is on I-75 N, so you'll need to come down to I-285 E to get to the show. Still, it's an Interstate drive most of the way so shouldn't be too bad. Book early. Campgrounds around here fill up fast and some ways in advance. Concealed firearms are legal in Georgia state parks with a valid CCW if Georgia and your home state reciprocate on licenses. OTOH, if you're protected by dogs, they just have to be on a 6-foot lead.

If you're bringing plastic, it was not well received at many booths the times I was there. Dealers that are present are usually OK with it, but custom makers and some factory booths wanted cash or checks. There are some ATM machines around the hotel lobby, but they were limited in how much you could withdraw at one time, they were expensive, and most custom makers didn't sell anything for the piddly little amount of cash they would let me withdraw ($200 was the limit, IIRC). This is from several years ago, so it may be different now.

HEADS UP!!! AIRFARE SALE now in progress, may end tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 6th.

Folks, I just got a tasty rate to BLADE. $176.30 fees/taxes incl. (not baggage fee). Seems that there's an airfare sale going on, got the tipoff from airfarewatchdog.com a little while ago. Booked my flight, saved over $50 compared to my last year's flight price. If you're flying, now's a good opportunity to check into booking your flight.

we still have to find a hotel, we don't want to stay as far from the Galleria as we did last year.
