It's sad to have to report this but Joe Szilaski had a Desert Iron Wood Fighter stolen from his table at the show on Sunday morning. Joe isn't home just yet but he thinks he may have a photo of it. I will post it in here if he does.

I hope the knife will be recovered, but not holding my breath.

There is a special place in Hell reserved for knife thieves. Think pineapple scene with Harvey Keitel in 'Little Nicky.'

Sorry to hear that. Joe has taught me nearly everything I know about knives aside from you guys. I hope it turns up.

This is sickening.

I don't want to spread rumors, but I heard from several people that a folding dagger was stolen from Mike Tyre's table as well. I should mention, that I didn't hear that directly from Mike himself.

That stinks. I love that makers let you freely handle knives but crap like this is going to force things to go under glass!

Why don't you people put your knifes in a class case or put a net over them to stop this??

Richard ^^^: The infrequency of this happening is far overridden with the ability to see, handle, and not have to go through a procedure to handle a knife.

If every maker had a glass case, I'd bet it would seriously reduce the enjoyment and probably the sales.

.1% of the world will always have an incorrigible bad element with no moral and ethical compass. We're fortunate.

Wishing for better. Joe was probably distracted because he'd won the 'Best of the Rest' with his spectacular Hawk.

I use to go and sell at the gun and knife shows. 90% of the dealers use the class cases or made it real hard
to just take the knifes off the tables but yet everyone there was having a good time. so I dont understand
what was the problem.

Most of the makers fly into Atlanta from all parts of the country and the world. Bringing a glass case along with you is a major ordeal. Heck just getting your self and your knives there is a major ordeal. Hopefully I can get a photo of the stolen knife this evening or tomorrow. I believe Coop has a photo of Joe's hawk in his Photo Gallery sticky. I would appreciate keeping this thread focused on the theft.

Because an important part of the show experience is the ability to really see and handle these knives. Although I have not gone to this show, the Oregon show this year was really cool. Getting to meet some famous people and actually handle the high dollar customs was a treat.

at the shows that I go to everyone gets to handle the knifes and I have never lost a knife.

Perhaps this is kind of a different show than the shows you're used to seeing KNIVES at. I suppose we could bolt them to the tables, or perhaps attach chains and cinder blocks to them, but that might affect a handling demonstration...

Happens at least once a year, and as Coop pointed out, it is still a fraction of a percentage that's violated, but it doesn't stop the sting. Thieves are evil, and Joe's a good egg that deserves better.

Very sad to hear this

We use a case

We get a lot of people around the booth at one time so its hard to watch everyone but i honestly never even thought of someone being under handed

We like the glass cases so we can display a lot of work

I hope a photo will be posted. I would like to post the piece on the CKCA Forum "Stolen/Lost Knives Bulletins" sub-forum.

It's a fact of life that whenever there's items of value in a public venue, there's going to be some degree of theft.
Our community is extremely fortunate that theft is so low. You take all the knives displayed during the year at all the custom knife shows in the US
and I bet the quantity loss to theft would hardly even be a measurable percentage.

So any attempt to have knives displayed under glass at shows would be a gross over reaction in my opinion.
