anyone know how chris reeve contours his blade and tang spines (rounding the top spines) I have a Bader grinder and was wondering if a concave wheel on my grinder would do the trick.

thanks jeff isgro

You could always try grinding two bevels at a very shallow angle and then rounding it off. I would think that you could finish it up by hand sanding using a block that had a bit of concave to it.

I use slack belt to get the rounded profile, then put the knife tang in vise(spine up) and with some old belts finish off the rounding. just put the belt on the spine and then pull downwards toward the edge alternating left and right hands. I am not sure that makes sense.

I've never liked using slack belts.
I'd just break the edge on a platen or wheel onthe 2x72 then (depending upon the radius) blend with a hard scotchbright wheel on a bench grinder.

I have heard that CRK uses cork belts. Those can be pretty versatile/controllable.

Like with a "shoeshine" motion you mean?

I have assumed he uses a round over bit on a CNC mill. I don't have one of his in front of me right now, but you can tell by looking at it closely. If it is done by hand, the curvature will vary along the length, if it is done by CNC mill, it will be an unvarying true radius.

thank you all for the great info. you have all been very helpful been making knives for 14 years and glad to be part of a great site.
