NEW MEMBER CALLING. i HAVE JUST AQUIRED 2 BLACKJACK KNIVES A TRACKER MODEL #7118 AND AN AWAC MODEL.
THE TRACKER IS A CLIP POINT 5.75" FLAT GROUND BLADE AND RUBBERISED HANDLE WITH A CORDURA SHEATH.THE FINISH IS SEMI POLISHED.THE BLADE IS MARKED BLACKJACK CLASSIC BLADES JAPAN. HAND FINISHED IN EFFINGHAM IL ON THE REVERSE
THE AWAC HAS A STEEPLY DROP POINTED 6" FLAT GROUND BLADE WITH WHAT APPEARS TO BE A PHENOLIC RESIN HANDLE WITH SINGLE FINGER CUT OUT. THE BLADE AND DOUBLE HILT HAVE BEEN BEADBLASTED. THE BLADE MAY HAVE ORIGINALLY HAVE CARRIED A NAME OR A DESIGN BUT THIS WOULD APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN GROUND OFF. THE BLADE IS MARKED BLACKJACK CLASSIC BLADES EFFINGHAM IL. THE CORDURA SHEATH IS MARKED EK COMMANDO KNIFE Co.
I WOULD BE GRATEFUL IF ANYONE COULD PASS ON ANY INFORMATION AS TO WHAT THE BLADE STEEL AND Rc WERE FOR THESE KNIVES.

REGARDS

BERTIE BLUNT.

That Awac is most likely the bead blasted model. They came with paper micarta handles, and 440A steel, imo, one of the worst examples of Blackjacks knives. Dunno much about the Tracker, but all the knives made in japan "appear" to be stainless steel, most likely 440a, but dont quote me on that.

the AWAC was actually 12c27 (same as Applegate-Fairbairn made by BJ)

They "lied" on that one in typical Blackjack fashion.

The Tracker was AUS-8. Some are reported to be quite soft and improperly heat treated.
Other than that, its one of my favorite patterns.

Oddly enough the classic blades series (randall style)were always touted to be 0170-6, when actually most were 1095.
Originally it was advertised as 50100B.

When it comes to the steel in Blackjack knives, buyer beware.

Anthony, care to explain further this steel mystery with BJ's. Trailguides were marked as A-2, were they really? Most other Classics were marked Carbon Steel and I just assumed they were the 0170-6 (what the hell is this anyway?) as advertised or A-2, your saying most were 1095? How can one tell the difference? Were the 1095 cryoed as stated? Any further help will be appreciated as I am a devote BJ fan. All I know is that I have had great experiences with mine as far as taking an edge and holding one.

It's only a mistake if you fail to learn from it!

All trailguides were A-2, as well as squad leaders.

The 1-7. 1-5,HALO-1,Woodsman,Chukker, Stalker etc or any other classic blade marked simply "carbon steel" is "more than likely" 1095, although some of the early 1-7's were 0170-6(50100B)(better known as Chrome-V in the old days when used by Western Cutlery, who pioneered its use in knives). BTW, Western made the original
Blackjack 1-7's until they also went belly-up and were subsequently purchased by Camillus.

1095 is good steel. Not as good as 0170-6 in my opinion, and certainly nowhere near A-2 in toughness, edge holding or the ability to get scary sharp.

THANKS FOR THE INFO GUYS.
12C27 I CAN LIVE WITH I HAVE THREE HAND MADE "ALAN WOOD" FIXED BLADES AND THREE NORMARKS (2 FOLDING 1 FIXED) MADE FROM THIS STEEL ITS IN MY HUMBLE OPINION A DECENT STAIN RESISTING STEEL THAT CAN TAKE A FINE EDGE AND HOLD IT REASONABLY WELL.
AUS8 BETTER THAN 440A I SUPPOSE BUT THE PRICE WAS RIGHT ON THESE KNIVES £70 THE PAIR.
