What domestic steel is similar to VG10 in the aggressively sharp edge. Don't need a long edge holding ability. I want to make a gents folder with a steel that will slice well.

I ask this question in the "Makers" section, guess they don't know me there, no response.;)

mind you i am no steel expert, but some of the spyderco guys on that forum seem to say...carpenters CTS-XHP has some comparable qualities to vg-10. i have no idea as i haven't owned a knife in CTS-XHP. i've never seen anyone outright say it's an american made version of vg-10, but there does seem to be some comparing to each.

I don't know of a direct American equivalent to VG-10, I'd think 154CM or BG42 might be the closest American steels to VG-10.

There is more to knife being a good slicer than just VG-10. Blade shape and geometry are just as important as the steel type and heat treat. There are many steels that will take a very fine edge.

154 / 440C are close enough. Bg 42 is a high speed bearing steel which holds an edge quite a bit better then vg-10 on average.

154CM is a really good affordable choice. I would instead use CPM154, it sharpens very easily, cleanly, and holds a great working edge. If you notice lots of higher end folders use that steel. Ask Ankerson about it, he has a AD-10 Demko custom that has CPM154. It's a screaming sharp beast.

"Aggressively sharp" as opposed to "edge retention".
Different question than the one that's been being answered.

American Steel.
Made in USA? or Available in USA?

Bohler N690 is available in the states, though it is made in EU.

If you want an alloy that takes an incredible edge and can live with Sandvik steel, then I'd go with 13C26. It was developed for razor blades. Takes an incredibly fine edge. I see that Admiral Steel carries it.

American alloy. Razor edge. I'd go find some 420HC. It'll do that.
