I saw the posts about steels you use. 425 mod was used before 1994 and 1994 to present is 420HC. I have 2 old buck knives the 425 mod steel. My question is does the 420HC hold an edge as good as the old 425 mod steel? Is the 420HC, like any other brands use in their knives. Just wondering why did you change steels?

My old bucks hold good edges and sharpen very easy and never have a hint of rust. They are very well made and as good today as when new.
 
There are lots of steels out there that are much harder to remove metal from. Then again there are lots of steel that are easier (soft plain carbon ones). If you can sharpen any of the common steels, buck's will not be a problem.

So I assume 420HC is 420 High Carbon. Is this really different than basic 420 stainless? How does this alloy compare to what you might find in a kitchen knife?
