Hi I'm new to the group and I'm also new to knife making I have just finished my design on a piece of ply all shaped and ready to go
I'm looking on some advice on the steel iv done some research and found that 1095 high carbon steel is probably the best way to start
So please don't be afraid of giving some of your advice on making a first knife it will be appreciated thanks

8670 from alpha knife suppy would be better. Easier to heat treat.

I wouldn't start with 1095 as a beginner. A lot more details go into the heat treat.

I'd rather have 8670 with a good heat treatment over 1095 with a bad heat treatment.

Stick with carbon steels in the .60 -.80 carbon range.

If I were buying again for my first knife I would go with Aldo from nj steel baron and his 1080....just about as fool proof as you can get.

That said my first blade was 01 then 1095 billet that i bought. I would say I like 01 better out of those 2 steels. now I forge reclaimed bearing races 52100 and leaf coil springs 5160.....all have been fairly easy to backyard heat treat as long as you read up on the steel you are using. Without proper equipment we will never get the most out of these but for just a hobby I am happy with the results.

1080, 1084, 5160. These are all good beginner steels that can be HTed easily in a home setup. They make excellent knives.
