What equipment do you have, or are you sending out to get it heat treated? Your steel choice depends on this information. Alpha Knife Supply is great do deal with if you are in the states, and knifemaker.ca is great in Canada.
1084 from new jersey steel baron is arguably the best beginner steel. High performance and easy to heat treat if you are doing it yourself. http://newjerseysteelbaron.com/shop/1084hc/
There are different options if you will be sending out for heat treat.
I bought about $100 worth of 1095 when i first started making knives about 7 months ago. I have one 12" section left and when it is gone i will be placing an order with new jersey steel baron for that 3/32" 52100, the only place i have found that carries that thickness. They have a pretty good variety of steels.
