Blade Steel

I was giving my Large 21 a cleaning today and noticed that it had a "C" on the blade. Now I know if the blade has an "s" it means the blade steel is S30V. Would a "C" mean it's of a different steel? I'm assuming that the steel is still S30V since it was made in 2008, but I've never seen a "C" before. So, my felow CRK enthusiasts, what say you?

Howdy, my friend. I believe CRK has marked A, B, C, and D for the quarters in the year the blade was made: A for Jan-Mar; B for Apr-Jun; C for Jul-Sep; D for Oct-Dec. So, your's was made in July, August, or September of its particular year.

If that's not accurate, I'm sure someone will correct me, and then I will blame the member who first wrote it because I read that here somewhere.

Cheers,

Derek . . .

Well, I know they did that on the handle slabs but this is the first time I've seen it on a blade. I had a total of 6 Sebenzas at one point in time, 5 had an "s" on the blade and one didn't have any markings (it was a BG42 blade).

It would be interesting if they started marking the blades like they do the handle slabs. If that's what the "C" means, then why wouldn't they have done that in past years?

Now that's a good question. Mine's got an 'S', and I'm interested in the answer too. Maybe before the 'S' they used 'C' for 'CPM' when they first switched to it....?

Well, I'm stumped. As far as I know, CR only marks uses the A-B-C-D marks on handle slabs. For curiosity's sake I'd give the shop a call. Remember that CR is a low production house and the product line continually gets "tweaked" and experimented on without wholescale changes.

I do know that one of the major headaches CR faces in the warranty department is the aftermarket swapping of missmatched blades. This results in many of the "my seb doesn't lock up right" problems people experience. CR hasn't had any way of tracking original blades with their original slabs, so this may be an attempt do just that.

At the risk of stirring the pot - DON'T SWAP BLADES UNLESS YOU PLAN TO BE BURIED WITH YOUR SEBENZA.

too much coffee maybe?

unless it is indeed a new way to approximate the match blade date to handle dates as DallasSTB has mentioned.

Interesting!

Must be a new 21 thing. Anyone else with newer 21's notice this?

Professor.

I may be wrong, but didn't we get a response from Chris at one point saying that any blade with an "s" on it was S30V? I'll try to dig up the thread...

S does mean S30V. BG42 blades had no lettering. Safetyman's 21 has both an S on one side, and a C on the reverse side of the blade (to my understanding -- did I nail it?).

Nope, just a "C" on one side. I'll find out what's going on...I'm really curious.
