looking to make a custom knife for hunting, camping and whatever else my question is im rough on my blades i dont mind taking the time to re hone the blade but i'm not sure what kind of steel to use that can take a beating and come back for more any help would be greatly appreciated

Head over to shoptalk and check out the stickys if you haven't already. Lots of good reading and many good steels for what you are looking to do. But what tools you have to work with will likely dictate the steel choice.

It seems to me that a big boar tusker or bolo made by scott gossman is the blade
For you ! Scott has a sub forum here and
He uses alot of different steels but I hear
his A2 i hear is top notch !

Right now a grinding wheel, hack saw and assorted files plan on getting a belt sander soon. The basic design is the knife from resident evil 4 not so much for the game its self but the overall feel of the knife.

1080 or 1084 is super cheap, makes a great knife and is easy to work with. The shoptalk stickies has a suppliers index so you can find someone near you.

the shop talk forum looks like it hasn't been active for quite some time unless i'm looking up the wrong area, and with the 1080 and 1084 steel what would be a good thickness for the length i'm looking at i was thinking 3/16 but am wondering if that would be to thin
