What is everyones favorite blade steel, and for what reason? Also, if you could have any steel on any knife, regardless of price, what would it be? I'm just curious.

My favorites are
s30v
Infi
Bg-42
Ats-34

Any steel on any model knife? here is a funny....
Strider Ajax made with INFI...yes please! ill take 2!

My favorite for the type of knives I use and types of things that I cut is AEB-L/13C26. I prefer it because of the very keen edge it takes, with a good wear resistance to ease of sharpening ratio. It holds an edge for a long time, and is extremely easy to sharpen. It has excellent corrosion resistance, I've never seen heat treated AEB-L with a spot of rust on it. Some Kershaw users have seen rust spots with 13C26, but those were all bead blasted blades. My knives rarely go through anything strenuous toughness wise, but theoretically it could have very high toughness for a 60+ Rc stainless.

If I wanted a knife with extremely great wear resistance, I might go for S30V or S90V, but for my own uses I prefer AEB-L.

S30V, D2, ZDP-189, VG10. In no particular order. I am looking forward to get a knife in S90V!!

VG-10, because it is easy to sharpen and stays sharp long enough for me. I tend to maintain the edge rather than let it go completely dull
H1, because it is very easy to sharpen and gets scary sharp without much effort....oh yeah, and no rust problems.

ZDP-189 might be ideal for me, but the only knife I have owned in ZDP-189 was a William Henry and it is a little small and delicate for me. It also had a very polished edge that was great for push cutting, but not aggressive enough for most real world cutting chores.

So, I pick D2. It holds an edge for a long time, takes a very aggressive edge that cuts tough materials well, is practically stainless, and more than tough enough for me. It is just an overall great steel for what I use knives for.

If I only opened the mail, I would pick ZDP-189 with a polished edge.

If I did a lot of outdoors stuff, I would pick INFI.

What knifves do you have in AEB-L? The new Kershaws are going to take a few months, and I don't want the current ones with aluminum handles.

They're all custom knives.

Thought so, who uses it? Chuck Stapel's the only name I've found online, and he didn't respond to my email.

Darrin Thomas, Art Washburn, and Ron Cameron off the top of my head. You can find some other makers using 12C27 like Pat Tomes. My father also uses it, but you won't get a knife from him.

BG42, ZDP 189, D2, M2, 1095, 5260, Blue steel

For a knife I can't realisticly get now I'd take S125V,CPM M4, CPM 15V, T1 and several japanese steels that I'll never see in my lifetime in a knife here. Joe
