What would you think be the best blade steel for a folder that is doing alot
of slicing on plastics, wood boards and some fabrics.???
what would be more important wear resistance or edge stability. For ie zdp 189 vary hard so it would have good edge stability, and cpm s90v with vandium carbide in it would make it wear resistant.

While I'm here I'll ask another question.
What steel will take the best keen razer hair poppin edge????
Ive heard rumers of bg 42 and zdp.But I'm open for opinions.

I feel like a teacher of something asking all these questions:D
OHH well it's all in good fun.

thx gine.

On plastics I would rate edgestability most important, because you often tilt the blade and load it laterally (even it you try not to). On woodboad (I assume you mean MDF?) that stuff (and some fabrics as well) are pretty abrasive. So I would rate abrasion resistance key on those. So I would chose ZDP-189 on the plastic and S90V on the others.....BUT...you are really playing in the big league with those steels. I have not tried S90V, but ZDP-189 doesn't have exactly low abrasion resistance either, so it should perform very well on both.

For the sharpest push cutting edge, I think I would always go with a nice carbon or tool steel, but ZDP-189 is very close. It burrs very little an takes a real nice edge very easily.

VG-10 works great on fibrous materials. If you're doing stuff like carpeting, tiling, etc, go with a simple utility knife. Cheap, sharp, easily replaceable.

What is more wear resistant out of the following???( from best to worst)pls.
cpm d2
cpm s30v
vg-10
154cm
zdp 189
H1
bg 42
440 c
aus 8a
8cr13mov.

thx gine.

The most amazingly hair poppin edges from Spydercos that I've owned have been with ZDP in the D4 Delica and the Caly 3. But what do I know?

From what I know first hand and have read, I'll list them in order from worst to best (remember, this is all my opinion and based on common knowledge):

Worst to best(edge holding wise):

8cr13mov
AUS 8
H-1
440 C
154CM
VG-10
CPM S30V
CPM D2

zdp 189
bg 42

Now I left a space between the last two because those are the only ones that I have not used. I have heard that they will hold their edge longer than the rest of the steels listed, so I let those be the highest two.

I hope this at least helps give an idea of the order that the steels are in, J.

Thx for the response, but I have read bg-42 is more like between cpm vg-10
and cpm s30v.
I am wondering about wear resistance not general edge holding but thx anyways.
