I made a few blahs on how/why blades sometime have orange peel look. Saturday evening, I ht a thin CruforgeV blade and it warped a little bit in a few spots. Well, saw the blade has an orange peel looks. Um... could Decarburized be a simple explanation for orange peel look?

The orange peel look is usually ascribed to steels like D2 being buffed, with the carbides and steel reacting differently. I wouldn't think Cruforge would behave this way. Did you do anything to it to grow carbides or aglomarate them? Long time at relatively high temps?

Did you overheat the edge ? How much did you remove in post HT work ?

Brass is noted for sometimes developing a surface that really looks like orange peel and properly called 'orange peel ' You should be able to find photos of that .

Sorry, for not labeled the pic.

The lower part of the picture with orange peel is the spine - not the edge. It's clearly orange peel is a surface thing because surface is clean toward the edge, where I grinded the decarb off.

At the risk of being a smart aleck, just figure out how to do it again, then call it an added feature. Looks kinda neat.

In hand, its texture looks rather nice. No fun grind them away, belt dulls fast and easy fingers burn.

It's more obnoxious than any orange peel I've seen before

It's not a texture that I would call orange peel. However I do think it was decarb from the original surface that you didn't grind enough off !

I'm totally curious in the analysis & finding.... Waiting patiently.

Don't mean it's a bad product, but it's just ... bad looking. If it works better for the steel then why not.

This blade was grinded free of scales prior to ht. Orange peel definitely something to do with ht decarb.

OK in daylight, this texture + a bit of patina look resemblance to aged+weathered (sort of inverted pitting) => woohoo, it's an antique, therefore justify 10x normal selling price:rolleyes:
