Blade thickness pre heat treat

I am in the process of creating my first knife. I'm using 1095 and I'm wondering how thin I should take the blade edge down prior to heat treat? Also, I've only used 50 grit, so far. What grit do most of you take your knives to before the heat treat process? Just looking for some tips.

1095 through 60 grit before heat treat .040
ALL S.S. through 220 grit before heat treat .020 works for me........

I take 1095 to 220 grit ( sometimes 400) and .030-.040" edge.
