Blade Tip Breakage

I broke the tip clean off, about 1" worth, of a Gerber Mk2 survival knife, back in 1982 in Germany, in the US Army. I threw it. I thought i missed, but i didn't. It stuck tip first but broke off in the tree. I dug it out, took it back to the PX the same day i bought it & they replaced it. I told them exactly what happened. I was surprised they replaced it. I have not thrown it or any other knife since.

It depends a lot on the specific knife. Something with a thin blade like a Spyderco Military probably won't tolerate very much prying. OTOH something with a tip that is relatively thick like these 2 CRKT's can do a lot of stabbing and prying without danger.

I've watched a lot of destruction test videos on youtube and they are eye opening WRT what some knives can accomplish. When you can stab a knife hard into a wooden 2x4 then bend it over sideways and break out a big chunk of wood, that is a strong tip. When you can stab a knife hard into a piece of sheet metal repeatedly and wiggle it sideways to pull it out, that is a strong tip. Don't try this with your Spyderco Military. The black CRKT in my photo looks like a knife that has had a lot of use- I actually bought it used with the intention of testing it by stabbing it through sheet metal.

I had a student that came to the range and he was EOD. He had a gerber LMF II that he had on his flak that was used ailey as a probe for digging up IEDs if afghanistan. That tip was gone! But mainly because of the fAct that he stabbed it into rock and packed earth for 7 months on a daily basis. And I stress the fact that it was rounded off not broken off

It happens lol, I knocked my para 2 off my work platform and it landed tip down into the concrete....
A fellow NZ spyderco forum member was nice enough to fix it up, we had lots of crazy ideas but went with the easiest repair, ended up slightly shorter but wont have to worry about the tip so much..
