Blade to Handle Ratio...

Do utility knives count? The large handled ones are like you speak.

No they don't count. I guess it's more about "intended design". I was mostly referring to folders. Not utility/box cutters or fixed blades.

:D I'm faced with a quandary decision.... installing new HVAC return grills inside my house.... Do I use a utility knife to cut the paint around the edges of the old ones or do I use a regular ratio'd folder? May have to sleep on this decision. ;) Since I don't feel like doing it today.

IMO, there's no such thing as too much handle, unless it's ridiculously so. Blade to handle ratios are for nerds to quibble over. The only thing that matters is how YOUR knife works for YOU. If you like something, does it matter what the next man thinks about it? Nope.
Exactly !

Some times I like a big too (two) fisted Zarker :

Mostly for slaying those monster cinnamon rolls that tend to get out of control in these parts.
Still fits in a front pants pocket even though the handle is significantly longer than the six inch blade.

Some times I like the handle to be just long enough to cover the blade when folded.
Boker Brad Zinker Urban Trapper. Rivals the Buck 110 for blade length

Fits in a shirt pocket.

And just look at the
the blade length to handle ratio on this Opinel ! ! !
How do they do that ? ? ? Must be Magic !

Some times I like the blade to be quite short but with a full length handle for a high degree of control.

Not to mention hobby knives such as Exacto knives.
Like a particular knife ? Have a use for a particular knife ?
Just buy the dambed knife. Don't get caught up in "Is it the most average DO EVERYTHING knife in the world ?". Does it balance exactly in the middle between blade and handle on your finger ? Who cares ?

. . . e.g., ever try that balance thing with one of theeeeeee most iconic / got to have one knives ever made ? The Original Buck 110 ?
yeah . . .
and wear your steel toed boots or don't try this at home ! ! !
I am a professional.

Use a Cold Steel XL model.

PS: come to think of it don't try that finger balance thing with the Holdout 1 I posted even with your steel toed boots !
. . . thirty four seconds into the vid.

The Cold Steel XL would do it! My returns have gotten a little rusty (almost 30 years old) and my wife in her wisdom painted the old ones with latex paint. At times the cats like to pee on them. Think that has ended however. Probably will start up again with new steel returns... ahhhh.

The CS XL would certainly end it.
Cats . . .
don't get me started on cats.
Thank Bob a clear minded thinker invented the Catapult or we would be infested with the nasty things.

The oldest metal knives we've found have handles much longer than the blade partly due to limitations of materials, but those knives were used for very utilitarian purposes.
So . . . box knives. You are talking about box knives.
Fedex was coming to Earth even way back then !
I always knew those guys were . . . like from another planet or something.
They are just different you know ?
Probably delivering U-bid packages from Maximegalon or Mega-Market at Port Brasta in Alpha Centauri.
I have a fixed blade box knife at work that I use for a specific kind of picking-at-it sort of motion that I have tried to replace with at least three different folders including the Wharncliff bladed Delica. Nope. That ancient old box knife does a better job. Fatter / larger handle with a shorter, thinner blade.

This one by Nazarov Forge almost presents as an optical illusion, in that the handle doesn't look quite big enough for the blade. Hard for me to capture that on film, but it's a fabulous knife:

I like smaller knives but I want a longer handle. Four inches or more for the handle, three inches or less for the blade is about right. As for blade choils, I love 'em. My most carried knife is a Dragonfly, a knife that would be unusable for me without the blade choil. If I need to chop something big, I'll use a machete or an axe. Or a chain saw.
