Hey everyone,

I just have some questions to ask and maybe a few random thoughts about bladeauction.com. My first question is what was the best deal that you received on a knife? This question stems from the fact that from what I have seen, most auctioners seem to set the reserve at a point where I might as well buy the knife from a dealer on the internet for a few more bucks.
Example: I bid on a MT udt for 94.00-only about 35.00 under what I could pay for it at knives2000.com. The problem was that I was one of the highest bidders, but I did not meet the reserve.
Anyways, my problem is that I need you all to fill me in on this auction because from what I have seen, it seems like this auction was meant for sellers to sell clones because when I want to bid on a good knife, the reserve is set so high that I might as well just find a good deal with an internet company and pay a few bucks more and not worry about bidding. Set me straight people and tell me or educate me about this auction because I am sleeping, eating and breathing a MT UT6, but can't afford the full price right now. I was hoping that in doing the auction I could find one for around 275 or 300. I appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Thank you,
Mike

I picked up a Tritium Kestral, M-UDT, Mini SOCOM set for $300 a few months back.
Just like the other auction sites, check often and try to bid at the last minute.

I often sell on BA and I set my reserve price lower (even with shipping) than the regular price is. But then - even though I include link to my web site (where you can see the regular price) to every auction - many people are bidding so much they end up paying double the regular price. I do not understand such a behavior but I am not complaining since it is good for me... :). I too buy some times and so far I got really good deals. If you think the price is too high (or the reserve price is too high) you can always e-mail the seller and ask or buy the knife somewhere else. Maybe the sellers will realize it is better for them to lower the reserve eventually - but on the other side - with so many "impulse buyers" on BA I don´t think that will happen anytime soon...

This thread is now in The Good, The Bad, The Ugly! There's still a link to it in the original forum so you can still get to it from there.

IMO, if there is a reserve price I don't even look at the auction. Why? Because the reserve price is a technique that cons the buyer into participating and getting into that, well maybe a dollar more and I can have it thing.

If a reserve price bothers you, then auctions are not for you.Even the most respectable auction houses have reserve auctions. This is so the seller can protect his investment. If your looking to buy a 300.00 knife for 50 bucks, that would be a rare reality indeed.Yes,auctions can be frustrating when there is a reserve that you don't have a clue as to the amount, and when you have competitive bidding.Auctions are not for everyone.

One more comment,I also don't really care for auctions too much because of the prices the items may go for.I would prefer to just buy the knife from a source if I can find it, and instead of the frustrations of auctions.

Sticknrun, if you are looking for a great price on a quality knife like a UT6 at an auction then you are going to have a very long wait. My experience has been that if there is a reserve on an item then it is usually set right at retail or even higher in some cases where the knife is a rare piece. I have been involved in two auctions where there was no reserve and I had the highest and only bid going into the last day of the auction. Guess what? On both occasions the auction was mysteriously cancelled before I could win it. The only thing that a place like Bladeauction is good for is buying a rare piece that you cannot find anywhere else such as an old James Brothers Cheyenne or Diamondback. You won't get it cheap but at least it's available on occasion. The only great deals I have ever recieved on knives have come from the fellow formites right here at Blade Forums. :D

Speak of the devil!

Kublai just posted an offer to sell a mint UT6 for 300 bucks in the forum. See what I mean Sticknrun. You won't find a better deal on a knife than from your fellow formites right here. :D

I have bought and sold on BA. I have gotten some good deals there too. I got a UT6 there cheaper than any dealer sells them. I will give you one example, Josh at PVK sells a lot of knives there. you can alway find good deals from him. Also you just have to spend time looking and waiting. If there is something with no reserve and no one else wants it then you might walk away with something pretty cheap. But most of the time you won't. It is also fun to look at the pictures too!

Mike,

I have done a lot of bidding on bladeauction, but have won very little.

Between the clone junk and the high reserve items there are very few good deals.

The best deals I have gotten were right here in the Exchange Forums. :)

yeah like i said you have to spend a lot of time looking and waiting. So if that's not your bag an auction site is not for you. You are correct when saying the best deals will be found here. like the knives I'm selling. check'm out. I had to throw that in there.
