Bladeforums BEST BOWIE 2014 - Voting CLOSED - Finalists Selected!

Post 1. Sam Lurquin
Such a well thought out and tested bowie design. Sam is so confident he made a dozen of them

Post 1. #4 Mike Ruth Jr. Johnny Reb
So beautiful but made for swinging. The one piece D guard is one classy unit.

Post 8. Mike Quesenberry MS submission
Shear complexity won me over, that and drop dead good looks.

Post 56. #1 Ben Seward carbon fiber Bowie
I can only imagine how fast this bowie is with the carbon fiber grip. The light weight, long cutting edge, short ricasso, long clip, clay coat HT and grip styling wins me over. All Business!

Post 87, #9 Aaron Wilburn
This is a Stunner to behold. The difficulty in construction from tip to pommel are done with absolute perfection but to me this Bowie is just simply Gorgeous!

Post 117 Stuart Branson
It takes guts to redefine the Bowie let alone toy with both American and Japanese Cultures but if anybody can pull it off Stuart can and did!

Thanks lieff - and Happy 2015 to you and to all.

I'll be signing off for the year now, and will check in with the thread and with Lorien tomorrow morning to see where we are with the voting. If it looks like things have slowed to a crawl, we will move to the next phase.

Don't sit on those votes gents - post 'em up!

I'll be riding tomorrow at noon. If we can have it all squared away by 11am Pacific, then I can help out with the final stuff.

Sounds like a plan. I'll wrap up voting by 10 Pacific so we can double check our totals and declare the finalists.

Too damn cold to ride here.:grumpy:

In general I'll take function over frilly, but there's an amazing beauty around a perfectly made knife. These are my favorites for the year.

Like everyone said, very hard to choose. Here are my pics.
1-1 Sam Lurquin Tsavo - Paranee Project
1-4 Mike Ruth Jr. Johnny Reb
35-1 Lin Rhea - Southland Bowie #3
48-1 Wieland - Big Boy Bowie
49-1 Wieland - Big Fighter with Walrus
50-1 "Orc Angel" Adam Desrosiers
122-1 Claudio CAS - Sub Hilt Ring

SO difficult to narrow down, but here goes:

3, #3 Lin Rhea Southland Bowie. I sincerely hope this one wins overall. I think it deserves to even though I can't really explain why - it just reeks of "superb".
48 Wieland Big Boy's Bowie - Completely unique style that makes you keep coming back to look at it again and again and again. Awesome.
49 Wieland Big Fighter with Walrus - Refer above.
56, #1 Ben Seward Carbon Fiber Bowie - it's all been said already about how "fast" this one looks.
86, #8 Jerry Fisk - Insane skills and imagination to come up with this. Just Wow.
39, #3 Jason Knight Damascus Fullered Bowie. This one screams excellence and awesomeness in equal measures. Fullers are good for blood-letting yeah? Alright!!
111, #1 Adam DeRosier - Unless there are guns involved, whoever wields this thing can shout "Stand Down!" with complete authority!

On a side note, I would like to vote this as the "Best Non-Bowie of 2014" (can you tell I'm a fan yet?) http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1175905-´THE-RAVEN´-hommage-à-E-A-Poe?highlight=POE

Been looking forward to this thread all year long. Here's what I'm voting for:
Post 6 - Knife 1 - Wheeler I had to choose this one just because of all the videos Nick put out there and all the knowledge I gathered from watching them. Plus I like the design and it seems to perform very well. It's not too fancy to not use it.
Post 6 - Knife 3 - Knight I met Jason at a meeting, at a Hammer In plus had the privilege of visiting his shop during one of my trips to the US this year. I was able to handle some of his work and was impressed by the handle design. Really like his fullers but even more on his Kukris.
Post 13 - Lisch The idea of that ring design is awesome.
Post 26 - Knife 2 - CAS I'm always impressed by the visual effects of that material combo.
Post 39 - Knife 2 - Lurquin I somehow prefer that design over the Tsavo.
Post 39 - Knife 4 - Marchand I like the material used here. It's something different and I like the look.
Post 48 - Knife 1 - Wieland Last but definitely not least. Guard and handle material are awesome. Plus I got to support the local guy.

Happy New Year everyone!

Outstanding job on the voting! Fair warning - this phase will wrap up very soon - as in this morning - so shake off the hangover and get any last votes in. :D

I wanted to mention that the more ornate pieces are all great achievements but they just do not do it for me, sorry.

No apology needed. Each year these threads display both the depth and the diversity of the contemporary bowie genre. I happen to like both the ornate and the more purpose-built, but I can well understand the preference for one over the other.

Lorien - please e-mail me at pinnocr@hotmail.com when you're up and about.

Perfectly understandable. No way to include every incredible work on its own merits. For me what works is to go with your gut on which entries give you "bowie fever" the strongest, whatever that genre means to you.

I'm not even sure what the genre means to me--my criteria are malleable. But I know it when I see it.

I think the work here is above and beyond. I appreciate the craftsmanship even in the knives done in styles that aren't my favorite.

1. Kyle Royer - Shell Guard Hanger Bowie (post 4) Everything about this one is right, the steel, the stag, the detail in the fittings. Its just not my favorite style, but its the level I aspire to get to one day.

2. Wheeler/Paranee Fighting Bowie (Post 6) I ordered one, with a Curly Koa handle.

3. Tembo (Post 15) Everything is right on this one. Such a clean vision on a collaboration is impressive.

4. Will Morrison (Post 31) Clean, and just the right proportions in such a large knife.

5. Wieland ´Big Boy´s Bowie´ (Post 48) My favorite maker. Totally organic. I wonder what he uses for fertilizer to grow these things.

6. Wieland ´Big Fighter with Walrus´: (Post 49) See above. That hamon!!!!!

7. David Lisch (Post 86) I love the split ring. I want to make one, but don't want to rip off the design. Proportions are always right on his knives.

I would have had to do a tie with the next 10 knives in my list. I am really impressed with the newer makers this year. I only did one bowie earlier in the year, and it wasn't well done enough. I have three in the works that I am hoping will be worthwhile to submit next year.
