Quillion guard is the only one practical and comfortable in my book. This said, quillion can be asymetrical, or even S-shaped. By quillion I mean flushed with the handle, versus the flat, oval or otherwise, guard we see generally.

I tend toward symmetrical but I like the Quillion as well.
